Hi, I just recently purchased this laptop. The keyboard has failed and I would like to know how I can find out if there is support for a replacement keyboard with backlight, on the mainboard. Can you tell me more about how to find out if there is support for this feature?

How do you know that the keyboard has failed?
I would tend to use the warranty. If you recently bought it as new stock, there is a free one year factory warranty.
From what I see in my research, the Pavilion g6-2000 model series laptop is from 2012. So, no warranty.
There has never been any support for Linux, so there may be a linux driver issue at play or the keyboard could indeed have failed.
Use the Maintenance & Service guide at the link to get the part numbers for the keyboard that matches yours. (chapter 3, page 15)

Good luck!
It may be less trouble to source a different refurbished notebook that is listed as a good Linux box at the Linux OS website of your choice.
That is what I did four years ago and it is still running strong.

It's good to hear from you.
I plugged in a external usb keyboard and the keys appear to work ok. With onboard keyboard I am unable to navigate the BIOS settings or terminal. Many of the onboard keyboards keys do not seem to do anything when pressed.
HP Part Surfer shows the replacement keyboard part number as > 699497-001 .
Can you tell me more about why this may be? The maintenance and service guide does show 681800-001 as the part number.

Did you use the laptop's serial number? That is the best way.

Using the HP PartSurfer will show accurate and current part numbers for replacement components.
That is what the HP Service Engineers use.
It appears that the original part number has been superceded with the new one. I see it is inexpensive. That is always good.
