Hi @jbryan777,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand how inconvenient it can be when your cordless mouse doesn't activate the backlit keyboard after your laptop goes to sleep, especially when you're used to the touchpad working as expected. Let’s explore some solutions to help resolve this issue.
I have a few questions to help you understand your setup better.
- Is the cordless mouse set as the primary input device in Windows settings?
- Have you checked the power management settings for your mouse to ensure it’s allowed to wake the device?
- Does the keyboard backlight turn on when using any other external input, like an external keyboard?
Let's try these steps.
Enable Mouse Wake-Up Feature:
- Go to Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click your cordless mouse and select Properties.
- Under the Power Management tab, check the option "Allow this device to wake the computer."
Adjust Windows Power Settings:
- Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Click on Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting, and set it to Disabled to ensure the mouse remains active.
Update Mouse and Keyboard Drivers:
- Ensure your mouse and keyboard drivers are up to date via Device Manager or by downloading the latest versions from HP’s support page.
Adjust Keyboard Backlight Timeout Settings:
- Press Fn + F5 (or the dedicated keyboard backlight key) to cycle through brightness settings and check if there is an option for "always on."
- If your HP laptop includes HP Command Center or BIOS options, check for keyboard lighting settings there.
Check BIOS Settings:
- Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI by pressing F10 during boot.
- Look for an option related to input devices or keyboard lighting behavior and adjust settings to allow external devices to wake up the system.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
