HP Laptop 15-dy5xxx
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, I recently suffered a spill on my laptop about two weeks ago now. I let the laptop dry for about 72 hours but unfortunately it suffered damage. I believe it was the battery. The battery was never detected through hp support assistant and the laptop would immediately shut off when unplugged.

I ordered a new battery and replaced. I turned on the laptop after the replacement and was still greeted by 100% charging. I ran the hp support assistant check again and still no battery detected. However, after being plugged in for about 5 minutes I decided to unplug the laptop. It stayed on. I am currently typing this while the laptop is charging for the first time. Is there any fixes to try and get the battery indicator to come back? Is there something else wrong with the laptop? Thanks for your help in advance!

@BraydenH23, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Given the liquid spill and the symptoms you've described, it seems like your laptop is experiencing issues related to the spill, particularly with battery detection and communication. Here’s a breakdown of the likely causes and steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

🔍 What We Know

  • Spill occurred ~2 weeks ago.
  • Laptop dried for 72 hours.
  • Old battery: Not detected; laptop would shut off immediately when unplugged.
  • New battery installed: Laptop stays on when unplugged, but:
    • Battery icon shows 100% constantly.
    • HP Support Assistant still says no battery detected.

🧠 Most Likely Causes

  1. Battery Communication Line Damage:
    • The data lines between the battery and motherboard may be damaged, preventing proper communication and detection.
  2. EC (Embedded Controller) or BIOS Glitch:
    • The Embedded Controller or BIOS may need a reset to recognize the new battery properly.
  3. Sensor Chip Damage on Motherboard:
    • Damage to the battery IC or charging controller chip could lead to incorrect reporting or lack of detection, even if the system runs on battery power.

Steps to Try

1. Perform a Hard Reset

This resets the Embedded Controller:

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Unplug the charger.
  • Hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Plug in the charger and turn it back on.
  • Check if the battery is now detected properly.

2. Reset BIOS Defaults

Sometimes the BIOS needs a reset:

  • Restart the laptop and tap Esc → then F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Go to Exit > Load Setup Defaults.
  • Save and exit.

3. Update BIOS (if possible)

If your system is stable enough:

  • Visit HP's website to check for BIOS updates.
  • Only proceed if the system is stable to avoid corrupting the BIOS during the update.

4. Use Windows Battery Report

Even if the icon is stuck:

  • Open Command Prompt and run:

powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery_report.html"

  • Open the HTML file in your browser to see if the system recognizes a battery under "Battery Information."

5. HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics

Run the built-in diagnostics from startup:

  • Restart and tap Esc > F2 (HP Hardware Diagnostics).
  • Run the Battery Test under "Component Tests" (if available).
  • If it says “Battery Not Installed,” the communication line or sensing chip is likely damaged.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Firstly, thank you for your help this far. I'll go through the following steps and my results.

1. Nothing happened here

2. Nothing here either

3. Did not perform BIOS update as my suspicion is a different issue

4. Attached an image to show what it said

5. Battery was not detected.

I am starting to sense communication line or sensing chip is likely damaged as you said. What are the next steps I can take for this?

Thanks again, have a great day.
