Microsoft Windows 11

I’m receiving a ‘Battery Counterfeit Check Error’ on startup, saying the battery isn’t an HP battery and fast charging might not be available. The laptop is 6-8 months old, has never been opened or had parts replaced, and the battery is the original one. I ran the HP Battery Check, which shows ‘Primary Battery: Normal’ at 95% charge. I also updated the BIOS via HP Support Assistant, but the error persists. Please assist.

@PC110101, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop is mistakenly detecting its original battery as non-genuine. Since you've already verified the battery's health and updated the BIOS, try the following troubleshooting steps:

Reset the Battery Connection

  1. Shut down your laptop.
  2. Disconnect the charger.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
  4. If the battery is removable, take it out for a few minutes, then reinstall it.
  5. Power on the laptop and check if the error persists.

Perform an EC Reset (Embedded Controller)

  1. Turn off the laptop and unplug the charger.
  2. Press and hold Win + B, then press and hold the Power button for about 5-10 seconds.
  3. Release the keys and let the laptop restart.
  4. If prompted, follow any on-screen BIOS recovery instructions.

Uninstall and Reinstall Battery Drivers

  1. Right-click the Start button → Device Manager.
  2. Expand Batteries.
  3. Right-click and Uninstall:
    • Microsoft AC Adapter
    • Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery
  4. Restart the laptop to let Windows reinstall the drivers automatically.

Check for Windows & HP Software Updates

  • Run Windows Update and install any pending updates.
  • Open HP Support Assistant and check for additional updates.

Disable Battery Counterfeit Check (if available in BIOS)

  1. Restart your laptop and enter BIOS (usually by pressing F10 repeatedly at boot).
  2. Look for an option related to Battery Counterfeit Check (not all models have this).
  3. If found, disable it, save changes, and restart.

Test with a Different Charger

If possible, try using another genuine HP charger to see if the error disappears. A faulty charger can sometimes cause incorrect battery detection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
