Hello,
My HP Envy is 4 months old so a new battery and new power pack, has never been packed or cords bent/broke. While plugged in the battery icon shows and the cord for ac adapter shows but at times disappears like not plugged in. The battery drains fairly quick. If I shutdown or just close lid it charges back to 100%, Once I start to use the battery starts draining again.
Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Hi @artamous, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Your HP Envy's issue—battery draining while plugged in—could be caused by several factors, including a faulty charger, power management settings, or hardware issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps:
Check the Power Adapter and Charging Port
- Ensure the charger is the correct wattage for your laptop (e.g., 65W or 90W).
- Try another compatible HP charger if available.
- Inspect the charging port for dust, debris, or damage.
- Plug the charger into a different power outlet.
Check Battery & Power Adapter Status
- Press Win + X > Device Manager > Expand Batteries.
- Right-click Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery > Click Uninstall.
- Restart your laptop; Windows will reinstall them automatically.
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press F2 at startup to enter HP Diagnostics.
- Run the Battery Test and AC Adapter Test.
Adjust Windows Power Settings
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Select Balanced or HP Recommended.
- Click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Under Processor Power Management, set Maximum Processor State to 90% (this can reduce overheating and power drain).
Update BIOS & Drivers
- Go to HP Support Assistant or HP support website to check for BIOS and chipset updates.
Monitor Battery Usage
- Open Settings > System > Power & Battery > Battery Usage to identify power-hungry apps.
Check for Overheating
- If your laptop overheats, it may throttle power, leading to battery drain.
- Ensure proper ventilation and consider using a cooling pad.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
