My laptop is under 2 years old, has the all day battery life as advertised but the battery anymore will only last at max 3 hours before needing to be charged. Is there a fix for this?

Hi @Michelle_Boer

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how disappointing it feels when a laptop that once promised all‑day battery life now struggles to last just a few hours.

Thank you for sharing the details, and let’s go through some practical steps together to help improve the battery performance.

Step 1: Run Battery Diagnostics

Your laptop has built‑in diagnostics that can check the health of the battery.

  1. Shut down the laptop.
  2. Press the power button, then immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
  3. Press F2 to launch System Diagnostics.
  4. Select Component Tests > Power > Battery Test.
  5. Follow the on‑screen instructions and note the results.

Step 2: Calibrate the Battery

If the diagnostic shows the battery is functional but the runtime is short, calibration can help:

  • Charge the battery fully to 100%.
  • Keep the laptop running on battery until it shuts down automatically.
  • Recharge it uninterrupted back to 100%.
This process helps the system read the battery capacity more accurately.

Step 3: Adjust Power Settings

  • Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
  • Under Power mode, select Best power efficiency.
  • Reduce screen brightness and disable background apps that are not needed.

Step 4: Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Outdated BIOS or drivers can affect battery performance.
  • Visit the HP support page for your model and install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.

Step 5: Use the HP App

  • Install the HP App on your Windows device.
  • Add your laptop and run the battery health check through the app.

Step 6: Battery Care Tips

  • Avoid keeping the laptop plugged in continuously; allow the battery to discharge and recharge periodically.
  • Keep the laptop on a hard surface to prevent overheating, as heat reduces battery life.
  • If possible, avoid running heavy applications when on battery alone.

By following these steps, you can determine whether the battery needs calibration, optimization, or replacement. Running diagnostics first will give a clear picture of the battery’s health before making further decisions.
