Hi all,
having battery issues with my nearly 2 year old laptop.
About a week ago, without any notice my laptop shut down at approx 40%, upon plugging it in and restarting, the battery had drained to 0%
I formatted my laptop on the 04.06.2019 (2 days ago) and at 71% I restarted my device and upon restart, it drains to 0% again.
I tried it again after it fully charged but the problem did not occur.
Tonight as I used my device it was at 31% and suddenly it shuts down, again upon restart it was at 0%
No warning of low battery occurs right before shut down.
Right now as I'm typing, when I hover over the battery icon it says the battery is at 33% capacity, but if I click on it and the window pops up it says 39%.
What I have done so far:
- factory reset and
- updated bios
What I did notice before factory resetting - but is NO longer an issue:
- My PC showed a 'Z' drive that I COULD NOT access - the drive is now gone
- Device manager had an '!" in one device *it was NOT battery* but I cannot remember what it was.
I fully understand battery are meant to not hold a charge as well over time, but I have never had a problem where it drains to 0 this fast, and without warning. i constantly try to take videos but since it happens at random occasions it has been impossible so far.
Appreciate any advice you can give
Thank you

The first thing to do is run a health test on the battery, which HP has provided either through the HP Support Assistant app or in the preboot diagnostics routine. For the latter, turn off, turn on and immediately tap esc then F2 for diagnostics, then component test and you will see an option to do a long test on the battery. Do that and report advanced results. Your symptoms are completely consistent with a battery that has reached the end of its useful life and odds are, its time to replace the battery, but getting actual data from a diagnostic test will allow us to be sure that is the problem.
The "Z" drive thing is pretty common and has nothing to do with the battery and if the device with the exclamation point is no longer there then we can't really figure that out either but unlikely it had anything to do with the battery.
