OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wd000 (7B9S2AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Starting from a couple of days ago, the battery in my OMEN laptop (which I've only had for about 11 months) has suddenly started draining fast when not plugged in. Most days, I run off battery for about an hour and a half. Before, it would drain down to the 50%-60% range, but now it's suddenly draining down into the 30s. I thought maybe it had something to do with Chrome, which seems to suck up the most energy, but I tried just having the laptop idly running tonight on battery, no programs actively open, and it was still getting down into the 30s after a little over an hour! My screen brightness is already set really low at 21, so I don't think the brightness has anything to do with it. I ran battery checks using the HP Support Assistant, both while plugged in and on battery, and they came back normal, with the full charge capacity at 90%, which I believe is good. I then did a test on the battery using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI thinking it might need to be calibrated, but it passed with no option to calibrate. Every test I've ran has said the battery is in good condition, so why is it suddenly draining so fast?

Hi @Artemisia24,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand that the battery on your OMEN by HP 16.1-inch Gaming Laptop PC 16‑wd000 has recently started draining faster than usual when running on battery power. Since the diagnostics show the battery health at around 90% capacity and passing all tests, the issue is most likely related to power management, background processes, or BIOS/power controller calibration rather than a failing battery.

Please try the following steps to help improve battery performance.

1. Update the BIOS (Recommended)

Updating the BIOS can improve battery management and system power behavior.

  1. Open HP Support Assistant.
  2. Go to Updates.
  3. Check for any BIOS updates available for your laptop.
  4. Install the update and restart the computer once the installation completes.

You can also check updates directly from the HP Software & Drivers page for your laptop model.

2. Perform Battery Calibration

Even if the battery test passes, calibration can help the system correctly read the battery capacity.

Steps to calibrate the battery:

  1. Charge the laptop to 100% while the system is turned on.
  2. Once fully charged, keep it plugged in for about 2 hours.
  3. Disconnect the charger.
  4. Use the laptop normally until the battery drops to around 5-7% (do not recharge during this time).
  5. Turn the laptop off and leave it off for at least 5 hours.
  6. Plug in the charger and charge it again to 100% without interruption.

This process recalibrates the battery sensor and can correct inaccurate battery readings.

3. Check Power Mode in Windows

  1. Click the Battery icon in the taskbar.
  2. Set the Power Mode to “Best power efficiency” when running on battery.
  3. Also check Settings → System → Power & Battery → Battery Usage to see which apps are consuming the most power.

Browsers such as Chrome and background apps can sometimes continue running processes even when minimized.

4. Check Background Applications

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Look under the Processes tab.
  3. Sort by Power usage or CPU usage to identify apps consuming more resources.

You can close unnecessary background programs while running on battery.

5. Update Windows and Drivers

Ensure your system has the latest updates:

  1. Go to Settings → Windows Update.
  2. Install any pending Windows updates.
  3. Also, check HP Support Assistant for updates to chipset, graphics, and power management drivers.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for the suggestions. I've tried most of them already, and they haven't solved the issue, unfortunately.

1. BIOS is up-to-date.
2. Battery calibration is the only thing I haven't tried yet. I'll do it tonight.
3. Power mode is already set to "Best Power Efficiency".
4. Almost all the processes say "Very Low" under Power Usage. The ones that are using the most are System, Chrome (when I have it running), and the Task Manager itself, and those are constantly changing between Low, Moderate, and High. When looking under CPU, those are also the main culprits. Doesn't seem like anything unusual.
5. Windows Update is up-to-date, and I've installed everything suggested by HP Support Assistant.

Like I said, I'll discharge and leave my laptop unplugged overnight to calibrate it. I'll let you know if that finally solves the battery drain is

Unfortunately, battery calibration did not work either, and now battery capacity is at 86%. I'm not sure what else to try.

I think I may have found the issue. I can't remember for certain, but I think I used to have "Auto Switch to Eco Mode" enabled in the OMEN Gaming Hub to go into Eco mode when on battery. If I did, it somehow got deselected, so I turned it back on, and now the battery drain seems much more reasonable. I was on battery for a hour and fifteen minutes this afternoon and only got down to 57%, which is so much better than the low 30s I was getting the past few days! So, if anybody is experiencing large battery drainage while using their OMEN laptop on battery, try switching to Eco mode if you're not doing anything that needs a ton of power.

Hi @Artemisia24,

Thanks for your response.

I really appreciate the detailed updates you’ve shared, it shows how thorough you’ve been in troubleshooting this issue

It’s great to hear that enabling Eco Mode has already made a noticeable difference in your battery life.

You’ve done exactly what we’d recommend: checking BIOS, updates, calibration, and power settings before narrowing it down to the OMEN Gaming Hub configuration. Sometimes these small toggles can slip off without us realizing, so your persistence really paid off.

If you notice any further irregularities, I’d suggest keeping an eye on background apps in OMEN Gaming Hub and Windows Task Manager, just to ensure nothing else is consuming extra power. But from what you’ve described, it sounds like you’re back on track toward much healthier battery performance.

I hope this helps.
