Hello,

Quick question:

If I replaced my the battery in my Laptop, would it void my warranty?

Same question for the CMOS.

Thanks.

@Chripper

Warranty is a grey/gray, area very hard to say in concrete. For new generation machines, adding something or fixing something is a work for Authorized Service Provider parts . You can do yourself. If something went wrong due to this upgrade, I think HP would not honor warranty.

Hope this makes sense.

Regards.

Thanks for the reply.

The real crux of the issue is that I'm being billed £426 for HP to replace my entire motherboard when they could easy fix my issue by taking out the CMOS for a couple of minutes.

Anyone would think that there wasn't a global financial crisis.

Hi, @Chripper

Unfortunately, simply removing the CMOS battery will not clear the BIOS password.

To remove a BIOS P/W from a HP business class notebook, HP customer service has to send you something known as a SMC.BIN file which is a bootable file that removes the password.

However, there were a lot of privacy concerns a few years ago really not having much to do with BIOS passwords and the like, more like internal issues, and HP quit offering any support whatsoever with removing passwords as a result of sweeping internal changes regarding privacy breaches.

As a matter of fact, I used to supply BIOS unlock codes all the time for the HP consumer class notebooks until March 1 of 2019, when we were ordered to cease providing that service to our fellow forum members.

The forum rules of participation have been amended to prohibit anyone from assisting with the removal of passwords.

Rule 4.d.

We could never provide assistance with a notebook like yours but only because we didn't have access to the SMC.BIN file program that HP used to use to send a file to a person needing help.

A typical request for a SMC.BIN file was handled as in this disussion...

Now HP's policy is outlined at the link below...They will not help anyone anymore with removing a BIOS P/W.

I understand your frustration and I wish we could help you but unfortunately that would be impossible.
