HP's Support Assistant indicates the battery in my 4 month old laptop needs calibration. So far, I have followed the recommended calibration process of charging the battery to 100%, running the extensive memory test until the battery is depleted and then charging the battery back to 100% and then rerunning the battery test. I have done this twice in the past 48 hours. I have also updated the BIOS, installed the latest version of the Support Assistant, and verified that I have the current battery drivers. After all of this, the assistant still says the battery needs calibration. The test results say cell4 is at 0mV but I assume that is because it is a 3 cell battery.

Does this mean the battery is failing or can I ignore the indicator?

How can I successfully calibrate the battery and clear the indicator?

So, I'm replying to my own message just to let everyone know that (somehow) I fixed the problem.  All I have done is to leave the laptop unplugged from the AC and used it normally for about two days. This morning the battery was dead and I plugged back into the AC and let it charge without turning on the laptop. It charged to 100% (white LED) in about 2 hours and I left it like that for about 5 or 6 hours. Turned it on a few minutes ago to do a couple of things. It still showed it needed calibration. For grins I ran the Support Assistant battery check and, voila, the calibration message is gone!

There is nothing more I can add beyond what I said in my reply above that is flagged as an accepted solution. I think just letting the battery deplete through normal use, not turning the laptop off while not leaving the laptop connected to AC power, and then recharging after depletion gave the Support Assistant a better indicator of the condition of the battery. Try that for a few days and rerun the battery test. Since I did that, I leave the laptop unplugged until it drops to around 10% to 20% before I recharge it. Battery condition continues to show as normal.
