HP Pavilion - 14-bf153sa

I'm trying to calibrate my computer battery but the instructions given by Hp don't seem to match my computer type. My computer is an Hp Pavillion 14 bf series. The video hp provides to help people calibrate a battery suggests I have a shortcut for the 'hp hardware diagnostics system' when powering up my computer. After following these instructions, it is clear that pressing f2 repeatedly on my computer doesn't seem to be the right shortcut. Any advice?

Hi @Pinkel613,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the standard HP instructions for battery calibration don't match your HP Pavilion 14 bf series and pressing F2 doesn't work, you can try the following steps.

Accessing HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Restart your computer and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  • From the Startup Menu, press F2 to enter System Diagnostics.

Battery Calibration using HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • In the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, select Component Tests.
  • Select Power, then Battery to start the battery test.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate the battery.

If this method still doesn't work, you can manually calibrate your battery using the following steps:

Manual Battery Calibration Steps

Charge the Battery Fully:

  • Plug in your laptop and charge the battery to 100%.

Let the Battery Rest:

  • Once fully charged, leave the laptop plugged in for an additional 2 hours.

Disable Sleep and Hibernate:

  • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings for your current plan.
  • Set Put the computer to sleep and Turn off the display to Never for both On battery and Plugged in.
  • Click Change advanced power settings and disable any sleep or hibernate settings under Sleep and Battery.

Drain the Battery:

  • Unplug your laptop and let it run on battery power until it completely discharges and the laptop shuts down.

Recharge the Battery Fully:

  • Plug the laptop back in and charge it uninterrupted to 100%.

After completing these steps, your battery should be calibrated. Re-enable your preferred power settings after calibration.

If none of these methods work, consider updating your BIOS and the HP Support Assistant tool to ensure you have the latest diagnostics available. Here’s how to update them.

Updating BIOS and HP Support Assistant

Update BIOS:

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page and enter your laptop’s model number.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS update.

Update HP Support Assistant:

  • Download and install the latest version from the HP Support Assistant page.

These updates can sometimes resolve issues with hardware diagnostics and battery calibration processes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hey Alden4, thanks so much for your help. So it turns out I'm really stupid and I was pressing f2 soon enough after turning my computer on. I have figured out how to get the hardware diagnostics running. After a four-hour wait for it to recalibrate my battery, i really thought this would be the end of my problems, but it didn't work. I looked (as ur other comment suggested) to update my bios, but when I put my serial number into the search bar, the website seemed to think the only windows my PC could have is windows 10. I in fact have windows 11 and since it wasn't giving me any option for that, i couldn't get any further with changing my bios. I'm really struggling here as I feel like I've tried so much already. I will try everything u have said in this post. If it doesn't work, i don't know wat I will do. The computer battery is brand new - I installed it myself 2 months ago, so it must be my system that is the problem...?
