Looking for advice.

I had a new laptop for Christmas. I had to callibrate the battery almost immediately.

Then again in January.

Then again in February.

And now, I am being told it needs doing again??

Surely I shouldn't need to keep doing it every few weeks? I use it on battery until its around 20% or sometimes a bit less, charge to between 90 (if I remember to unplug it) or 100%. Sometimes I keep it plugged in, but more often than not I run on battery as I don't know which is best for it. But my old HP was the same and I didn't have to callibrate it ever. The only difference was (its now ancient) the battery was a removable one and it lasted three times as long.

It just seems crazy that I need to keep doing it this often when its a matter of not being able to use it for a day.

Hi @tlise,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It does sound frustrating to have to calibrate your laptop's battery so frequently. While occasional calibration is normal for lithium-ion batteries, having to do it every few weeks seems excessive. There are a few factors that could be contributing to this issue.

  • Battery Health: The battery in your new laptop might not be holding a charge as well as it should. It's possible that there's a defect in the battery or it's simply not a high-quality battery.
  • Charging Habits: Your charging habits seem generally okay, but it's worth mentioning that keeping the battery consistently charged between 20% and 80% can help prolong its lifespan. Charging it to 100% and letting it drain to near-empty frequently can contribute to quicker degradation.
  • Power Settings: Check your power settings to ensure that your laptop isn't unnecessarily draining the battery. Sometimes certain applications or settings can cause excessive battery drain even when the laptop is idle.
  • Software or Firmware Issues: There could be software or firmware issues causing your laptop to inaccurately read the battery status, leading to the frequent need for calibration.

In the meantime, you might want to try recalibrating the battery one more time and see if it improves the situation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi, I wondered about the battery not being so good as it should be as other people don't seem to have the same issue. But the battery tests all show ok so I don't know.

As regards the battery draining, I have everything off that I don't use. Brightness lowered, etc etc.  Power settings were set as someone else recommended or already there so I cannot see I can improve them anymore 😒

I only really have the programmes that came with the laptop, except for ones I had installed on my old laptop (Farm Heroes app, screenpal, HP apps, gimp and ccleaner) and they are all updated so I cannot see its that.

I'll run a callibration again but there is never a good time for it and it means I cannot get rid of the old one as I have to keep using it again for the day 😒
