Hi there,
I'm contacting you as I have several concerns regarding my new OMEN 16-n0000 gaming laptop.
First things first, I updated the computer and the BIOS using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics app on day 1 (I received computer on January 16)
Since I had serious battery issues on my previous laptop, the first thing I did when I received the computer was checking if the battery was new and its capacity.
-
1. The logic state of the battery was set to "CALIBRATE"
It surprised me, a new computer battery should be calibrated right ?
So I contacted HP support, they told me to update BIOS (which I did since day 1 as stated above),.
And they even gave me an outdated version of it - which is also the case on HP official website.
Well, it did not make me feel confident...
Plus the fact of the agent that told me "it is advised to manually calibrate battery for a new laptop, even if not asked by the system" - (LOL! hopefully I checked the battery state..)
Then they asked me to calibrate the battery, which I did, last night.
This leads me to point 2.
2. After 9 days, battery maximum capacity is at 96% (a decrease of 4%!)
Is this something normal, or should I be worried?
The support did not help me at all regarding that, for now they do not know what to tell me...
Also Windows battery report shows that the battery capacity history decreases everyday a bit.
The battery is now calibrated, and it seems that it gave me a little more autonomy.
I use my computer plugged everyday, and wants my battery life to be saved, not to be decreased everyday..
This leads me to point 3.
3. It is possible to limit battery charging to 80% ?
Again HP support could not answer me regarding that.
When I checked online, I see it should be a setting in the BIOS that allow this on some HP laptops.
Unfortunately, the only setting that I have is : "Adaptive Battery Optimizer", which is enabled.
It seems I cannot limit the battery, which is a shame on a recent computer like this one to preserve battery life longer.
-
To sum up, here are my final questions (if TLTR as well haha) :
- It it normal that the battery was not calibrated initially on the new computer?
- It is normal that after only 9 days, battery maximum capacity is at 96%?
- Is thre a simple way to limit battery charge to 80%?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,
Matt

Hi @emveez,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I see that you are facing issues with your battery calibration.
1. It is normal that the battery may not be calibrated because it is an accessory fitted to the unit.
2. HP Power adapters are designed in such a way that the battery is not charged to 100% to ensure maximum battery life.
3. HP Consumer laptops do not have an option to limit battery charging value to 80% and is available only Commercial models.
Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution. Click the “Kudos/Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!
I hope this helps.

1. I understand, but the product is brand new, it should have been done. I mean if I didn't check the battery, I would have no clue about it. A regular user wouln't have done it.
-
2. What I meant is battery theorical capacity is 83.02 WHr, and now it is 80.05 WHr maximum when it is fully charged. That represent a loss of 4% compared to the theorical capacity in just 2 weeks of use.
Is that something normal? The support via WhatsApp told me it is not, but they are not tech people and you can see that they don't know anything about hardware, they just follow procedures.
So, should I worry of this 4% loss? Since I calibrated the battery, it still is 96% maximum.

3. In fact, it seems they do have this option as pointed by chat support. But not for my computer unfortunately.
Check here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06525451
I only have the "Adaptive Battery Optimizer" option instead, but I don't really know how it's used. Hp documentation is quite vague about when it triggers and how it works exactly.
