I have bought a HP bs180tx laptop 2 years ago, but recently I found a strange problem that,it start charging on and off at frequent interval even though the charger is connected. This interval may varies form 40-60 sec .I found that charge indicator led becames white(This usually happens ones the battery is full when charging it becomes orange) even the charge level is below 80% and when I hover over the battery icon it says plugged in not charging. After few seconds the led becomes orange and laptop starts charging. And I also found that this only happens after battery charged above 73%.Before reaching that point it charges normally.when I started exploring about these problems the main Ideas that I found was
- Battery cycles & Battery capacity - Battery status from diagnosis HP assistant report which makes sense that battery full charge capacity is 76% ,so once the battery reached above 70% the sensor starts assuming that battery is full and turns the white led.Thats my assumption (1),is that correct?
- If the 1st assumption is correct then the same thing happens when the laptop in completely shutdown state, then there is no problem related to battery drivers (since I updated the BIOS and battery drivers to latest version). How battery indicator knows that?
- The 2nd thing that strikes is to use the windows utility powercfg /batteryreport which also confirms the 1st report Battery report html page which states DESIGN CAPACITY 41,610 mWh FULL CHARGE CAPACITY 31,886 mWh that full charge capacity is 75% of the original capacity so that battery has only 75% of the original capacity.
- An important to note that my is battery cycles 174/300 . From various sources I found that these above problems occur only after these cycles are completed, but still 120+ are available why these occurs ?
- Are they symptom for the end of the battery life?
6. Should I buy a new battery or any other problem else than that?
Note:I have followed the steps given in hp forum(related to this problem) with no success

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
- Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
- Does the notebook shut down immediately (right after you unplug the charger)?
- Did you check the Ac adapter cord for any damage or loose end?
While you respond to that, let's try these steps:
Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)
BIOS default:
- Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
- Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
- On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
- Press F10 to Save and Exit.
- Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
- Follow the prompts to restart your computer. If the issue persists, follow next steps.
Run hardware diagnostics test on battery and Charger:
Use the following steps to open the Component Tests menu.
- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- On the main menu, click Component Tests.
- The Component Tests menu displays. Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.
- To run both tests simultaneously, in the Component Tests menu, click Power Source, and then click Run once. Each component can also be tested individually.
AC Adapter Test:
The AC Adapter test provides an interactive test to determine if the AC power adapter is functioning properly. A good battery is required for this test. Before running the AC Adapter Test, HP recommends verifying that your computer can receive power by connecting a known working AC adapter.
Follow these steps to perform the AC Adapter Test.
- In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click an AC Adapter Test.
- Click Run once.
- The AC Adapter Test begins.
- When the test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.
Battery Test:
Follow these steps to perform the Battery Test:
- In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click Battery.
- Click Run once. The Battery Test begins.
- When the battery test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen. For additional battery information, click Battery Details.
If the test passes, continue with these steps:
1. Go to Start, search for Device Manager, and open this result.
2. Expand batteries.
3. Right-click on the ACPI option (usually the 2nd option) and select delete or uninstall. Follow the prompts.
4. Shut down the computer.
5. Disconnect the charger.
6. Remove the battery.
7. Hold down the power button for 1 minute.
8. Insert the battery only.
9. Attempt to turn the battery on.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

- No I haven't updated the windows recently and there seems to be no problem across the power cord.
- My Notebook doesn't shutdown if I disconnect the adapter.
- The main thing here that I want to register is ,the behavior of the laptop is very fine until it reaches the battery power 76%.After reaching that point the led glows white and connected not charging problem occurs and it never reaches 100% because it starts charging after 1 minute and cutoff after 1 minute repeatedly. The white and orange led glows alternatively at the interval of 1 min .
- I have updated the bios to latest version with the help of HP assistant So I don't have component test under the bios menu.So I have downloaded the HP hardware diagnostics tool from the official website which has component test that gives the status passed for both battery and adapter.
- I have uninstalled and reinstalled the battery drivers many time with no success.
- There seems to be no problem in the AC adapter because the Notebook works normally though the direct power seamlessly.
- Will the reset works because, this problem persists even the Notebook is in the Shutdown state(completely).
- How adapter cutoff the power once the battery reaches its full capacity? How does it know that the battery is full.Is there any sensor playing the role here?
