Hi !
I was given an Elitebook 8560p, with 2 batteries, 2 chargers, and one dock, a few years ago.
When I received it, it was under Windows 7.
A few month ago, as I was experiencing some software problems, I decided to format it and install Windows 10. I have not used it much since.
Recently, I tried it again, and noticed that the battery was not charging even though the charger is connected, when the computer is turned on.
However, when turned off, the battery is charged.
If I remove the battery and use only the charger, it works fine.
Battery only without charger works normally also.
Inserting the battery while powered with charger immediately turns off the laptop.
Using the docking station gives exactly the same results.
HP diagnostic can not test the charger if the battery is in, but give success without battery.
It can not test either batteries.
I tried every combinaison of charger and battery I have, no difference.
I did a hard reset (removed everything, hold power for 15 seconds, plug back in), no change.
Tried running a linux on usb stick, same behavior (battery not charging)
This leads me to believe it's not a software problem, but either firmware or hardware.
Bios is already at the latest version.
So, anyone has an idea on how to identify and solve the problem, please ?

Do both batteries behave this way? I think the only explanation I can think of is that the battery itself has a bad smart chip and when you apply power to charge it, it shuts down the OS if it is running but not if the laptop is off. Just a guess and the only way to know is to try a new battery. The fact that you cannot run a complete battery test bolsters my opinion. The only other explanation is a bad motherboard with a defective battery charging rail.

Thanks for your answer.
Both batteries behave this way indeed.
I noticed however that both charger don't behave the same way : one allows the charging of the battery while powered off, but the computer does not power up when only this charger is plugged (without battery), while the other one doesn't charge the batteries, but allows the power up.
So I would guess there is at least one defective charger (which would explain the fact there are two), and it's very possible the two batteries are defective also.
I will try to get a new battery and test with it.
For information, in case another battery have the same behaviour, which would point to a defective charging rail on the motherboard as you point out, I don't suppose this rail is a separate component which can be changed ?
