When running a battery check of this new laptop (purchased Dec 15, 2021) using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows 1.8.0.0 the battery Passes but the log says "Primary Charge Control: Failed" when the test is run with the laptop's charger plugged in and connected. Running the same test with the laptop not on the charger the battery also Passes but the log says "Primary Charge Control: Not Supported". The Primary Temperature was 27 deg C for both tests so I do not think it is overheating. This is a new laptop and if the battery is not being charged correctly (or being overcharged) it would be best if this was fixed before damage occurs (or a fire).

Thank you.

This is concerning and you need to make a warranty claim. That is not the function of this Forum. I have also alerted moderators to provide whatever help they can. Good luck.

Are you experiencing problems with charging the battery or otherwise with the operation of the laptop (other than the error message)?

Hi

Thank you for your quick reply!

So far the battery seems to be charging normally and there are no issues with the laptop (except the message in the battery check log).

I have returned the laptop for exchange. When I run the battery check the log message now reads Primary Charge Control: Supported.

I think so too! I am so glad I asked this forum and that you took the time to reply. This was a potential fire hazard. Li batteries can explode or catch fire if they are overcharged (like most batteries) or shorted out. I could just picture this happening when I am giving a Zoom lecture to my students (fortunately I always use a lap board to keep the circulation going to both the laptop and to my legs).

Thank you!!!

I have replaced the first computer with an identical one (under Best Buy Total Tech warranty). The replacement PC was put into service on Jan 3. Within 10 days the battery check showed the same failure (Primary Charge Control: Fail). When I contacted HP Support we ran the F2 test and the battery passed but the HP PC Windows Support test said that the battery needed to be recalibrated. This seems strange as I have never had to recalibrate a battery for a HP computer (11 year old 17 in Pavilion laptop and a 4 year old HP Spectra 15.6 in, both of which still have working batteries).

We are now recalibrating the battery. I hope this works as this situation has been going on since Dec 15 and I cannot be spending my life testing batteries!
