HP Laptop 15-bs0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The battery doesn't charge above 90% and laptop abruptly shuts down at any point below 20% battery.

After 85%, it starts a weird cycle of charging /plugged, not charging and then finally stops at around 90%.

I have tried most of the methods, including :

  • Uninstalling ACPI battery control driver and restarting.
  • Removing the battery and pressing the power button for a few seconds.
  • Updating the BIOS.
  • Calibrating (not properly, see below)

The HP support assistant says The Battery needs Calibration, The Procedure to do that as I understand is,

  • Charge to 100%
  • Discharge completely
  • Charge again to 100%

But apparently I can't do so because of the fact that I can't charge Laptop to 100% at the first place, it stops at 90%, neither can I discharge it fully, it shuts down at about 18-19% without any warning.

But I still tried it by charging laptop to 90% and then discharging followed by charging again, which again stopped at 90%.

Also I don't think the Battery is faulty because laptop can run on battery for 3+ hours easily.

Help is appreciated.

@utk2, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this issue by performing the necessary troubleshooting steps.

Let us run a hardware test on the battery:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  3. Perform Component Test > Power > Battery. Share the result on your next post.

Keep me posted.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Hello,
There is no test about battery in the F2 menu, no option for Power.

thanks.
