My battery has suddenly started to drain too fast all of a sudden since 2 weeks ago shortening my battery life from about 5 hours to 20 mins. I ran the diagnostic tests and no failure was detected in the battery hardware. I even shut down any background processes that might have consuming a lot of battery (stuff that was already working before my battery even started to drain). What are the possible fixes for this problem?

Hi @Isha_B,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop's battery is suddenly draining very quickly, there are several potential causes and solutions to explore.
Check Battery Health
- Battery Report: Generate a battery report to check its health:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. The report will be saved as an HTML file, usually in your user folder.
- Review the report for any irregularities such as a significant drop in full charge capacity.
Power Settings Adjustments
- Change Power Plan: Ensure you are using a power-efficient plan (e.g., Balanced or Power Saver).
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options, and select a power plan that optimizes battery life.
- Disable Fast Startup: Sometimes, fast startup can cause issues with battery management.
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
Update or Rollback Drivers
- Battery Drivers: Make sure that your battery drivers (especially the ACPI-Control Method Battery) are up-to-date.
- Go to Device Manager > Batteries > Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Update driver.
- If the problem started after a recent driver update, try rolling back the driver instead.
Check for Resource Hogs
- Task Manager: Even if you’ve already disabled some processes, it's worth checking again.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and look at the Processes tab to identify any resource-heavy apps that might have been running in the background.
- Pay attention to apps that are using high CPU, Memory, or Disk, as they can contribute to battery drain.
Disable Unnecessary Startup Programs
- Disable startup apps that might be consuming battery by going to Task Manager > Startup tab. Disable anything unnecessary from running at startup.
Battery Calibration
- Sometimes, recalibrating the battery helps in resolving charging and draining issues.
- Fully charge your laptop to 100%, then let it discharge completely until it shuts off.
- After that, charge it back up to 100% without interruption.
Windows Power Troubleshooter
- Run the built-in Power Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Power.
- This tool can help detect and fix common battery and power issues.

Check for Malware or Background Processes
- Run a full system scan with Windows Defender or a trusted antivirus software to rule out the possibility of malware that could be consuming resources and causing fast battery drain.
Update BIOS and Firmware
- Check for any available BIOS or firmware updates from HP, as sometimes power management improvements are included in updates. You can download the latest BIOS version from HP Support.
Consider Battery Replacement
- If none of the above solutions resolve the issue and your battery health is significantly degraded, you may need to replace the battery. Even though the diagnostic test didn’t show hardware failure, battery issues can sometimes be subtle.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
