I recently got a new battery for my pavilion 15ef. I have checked task manager, and the CPU is barely under load. And even on the desktop wallpaper, with nothing open, it drops a percent every 1-2 minutes, what can I do to fix this?

Hi @Teralin

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you recently installed a brand‑new battery in my HP Pavilion 15ef, but it’s draining much faster than expected. Even when the laptop is idle on the desktop with no applications running, the charge drops by about 1–2% every minute. Task Manager shows the CPU is barely under load, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Check Battery Health in Windows

  • Install or open HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to Battery Check under the “Device Health” section.
  • Review the report:
  • OK → Battery is functioning normally.
  • Calibrate → Battery needs a full discharge/recharge cycle.
  • Replace → Battery is failing.

Adjust Power Settings

  • Open Settings → System → Power & sleep.
  • Under Power mode, select Best power efficiency or Power saver.
  • Reduce background activity:
  • Disable apps running in the background.
  • Turn off Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi when not needed.
  • Lower screen brightness.

Update Drivers and BIOS

  • Open HP Support Assistant or visit HP’s driver download page.
  • Update:
  • BIOS (firmware updates often fix power management issues).
  • Chipset drivers.
  • Graphics drivers.
  • Restart the laptop after updates.

Run UEFI Battery Test

  • This checks the battery at firmware level, outside of Windows:
  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Power it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  • Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Select Component Tests → Power → Battery.
  • Run the Battery Check.
  • The test takes a few minutes.
  • Results will show:
  • OK → Battery is fine.
  • Calibrate → Perform a full discharge/recharge cycle.
  • Replace → Battery is defective.

Calibrate the Battery (if needed)

  • Charge the battery to 100%.
  • Disconnect the charger and let it drain to 5%.
  • Recharge to 100% without interruption.
  • Repeat once if necessary.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
