The battery is apparently swollen; a bulge is centered under the left-hand-side ALT key. I'd like to know whether I can access and replace the battery myself, and if so, what is the procedure.

Hi:
There is no service manual, but here are a couple of videos:
HP 15s-fq1515na RAM Upgrade Guide - YouTube
HP 15s fq series Laptop Upgrade | Disassembly | Ram , NVMe SSD | 2022 - YouTube
Below is the link to the parts list for your notebook which has the battery part number and description.

The battery you need is on backorder if you want a genuine HP battery.

Thanks very much for that, Paul.
I found this manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06510442 It seems to refer to models using the same chassis, so it's pretty good to follow. I've ordered a non-genuine battery, but if it causes any problems I know what do do now, thanks.
Accessing & removing the battery seems as easy as ...
1) Take anti-static precautions.
2) Remove laptop's rubber feet to access all underside screws.
3) Remove underside screws.
4) Pry away the underside panel.
5) Remove battery screws.
Reverse procedure to reinstall.
