Hi @probe2,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your laptop battery is not charging above 60% and its capacity has been decreasing over time, this could be due to several potential issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to diagnose and address the problem:
1. Check Battery Health
Windows Battery Report:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
- The report will be saved as an HTML file in your user directory. Open this file to view detailed information about your battery health and capacity.
Battery Health Check:
- Some laptops have built-in diagnostics for checking battery health. Refer to your laptop’s manual or manufacturer’s website for specific instructions.
2. Reset Battery Calibration
Power Off:
- Shut down your laptop completely.
Disconnect and Remove Battery:
- If your laptop has a removable battery, unplug the charger and remove the battery.
Press Power Button:
- Press and hold the power button for about 15-30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
Reconnect Battery:
- Reinsert the battery, plug in the charger, and power on the laptop.
Charge Fully:
- Let the battery charge to 100% without interruption. This helps recalibrate the battery sensor.
3. Update Battery Drivers
Device Manager:
- Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Batteries section, right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and select Update driver.
Automatic Search:
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the instructions.
4. Check Power Settings
Power Options:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.
- Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
Battery Settings:
- Ensure that battery settings are configured properly and not limiting the battery charge.
5. Inspect Power Adapter and Cable
Check Connections:
- Ensure that the power adapter is properly connected and that there are no loose or damaged cables.
Try a Different Adapter:
- If possible, test with a different power adapter to rule out issues with the adapter or charging port.
6. Run Battery Diagnostics
Manufacturer’s Tools:
- Many laptop manufacturers provide diagnostic tools. Check the manufacturer’s support website for tools or utilities specific to your laptop model.
Windows Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Run the Power troubleshooter to detect and fix any power-related issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hey @Rachel571
Thank you for the response.
My battery diagnostics say that the max cycles are completed. 1008 vs 1000. Would this method still work? Or should I get my battery replaced?
