My laptop is:
HP Pavilion Laptop PC 14-dv0000 (9WF42AV)
It is a month old and when I turn it off I can still hear a small noise like a tiny siren sound from under the laptop. I presume it's the battery, which is integrated. And it sometimes takes up to 10% off the battery charge.
Is this normal, do i have to change settings, or is it faulty ?
Thanks
Ciaran

Modern laptops with integrated batteries continue to draw power from the main battery when off because the main battery also serves as the real time clock/CMOS/BIOS battery. It should not be making an audible noise, however. Try pressing the shift key before you select shut down as with Windows 10 just plain shut down is not a full shutdown. The noise you are hearing might be what is called coil whine which comes from the video card or motherboard and is very hard to troubleshoot and fix. Let's see what happens when you do a complete shutdown.

Hi Huffer, thanks for the reply.
I Should have mentioned that the noise is only audible when I put my ear to the keyboard or the back/battery part. As I say, it's like a siren sound. Would that just be the battery drawing power then ? I don't believe that it's a coil whine.
I tried the 'shift' button when shutting down and it still happens, though I did notice that McAfee loads up quicker (as I put the Firewall on lockdown when shutting off the laptop and normally it would take a minute for me to be able to switch from 'lockdown' to another setting, but after turning the laptop on when shutting down with the shift button I am able to do it immediately).
If the noise isn't the battery drawing power I'll take the laptop back to Curry's for them to have a look at.
Thanks
Ciaran.

Never known a battery to make a noise like that. I guess anything is possible and if it is doing that and you have the option to have it replaced or return it I would as it is not likely to get any better on its own.

Hi again,
I found the problem !!
I was disconnecting the laptop to take it over to Curry's when I decided to give it a listen once more and the noise was gone. I figured out that the last thing I took out was the mini USB receiver for my mouse !! So i plugged it back in and the sound reappeared. So that was the source. Just need to remember now to take it out when I'm finished with the laptop.
I'd recommend to other users if using a wireless mouse to listen for a tiny noise from their laptop as clearly to me something is still motoring when the USB receiver is plugged in even when the laptop is switched off and the battery from the mouse is taken out.
Huffer, while I'm here, could you also please expand on shutting down with the shift button ?
Many thanks
Ciaran.

"Full" shutdown vs. "Hybrid" shutdown.

Thanks,
So if I want a complete shut down of my laptop would the best method be to disable fast startup in the power & sleep settings and then also do as the article suggests:
You can even make this little command a desktop shortcut for easier access. Right-click on your Windows 10 desktop, select New, and then Shortcut, and enter this for the shortcut’s location: shutdown /s /f
I don't care at all about the start-up time.
Cheers
