On turning my laptop on this morning I am experiencing the battery plugged in and not charging problem that seems to be common. I have tried uninstalling the battery drivers and the turning off, removing battery and holding the power button down for 15s etc. I have also updated the BIOS. I am still having the same problem. Is there anything else I can do before having to buy a new machine?

Happens all the time. When it's your time it's you time and that goes for laptop batteries.
(18) Battery (4-cell, 41-Whr, 2.8-Ah Li-ion) 800049-001
Battery replacement instructions begin on p. 40. This is an external clip in battery and no need to even open the case. Your model may not be Star Wars branded but its the same basic laptop so shares a Service Manual.
Amazon UK Prime compatible replacement battery:
HP Parts Store is out of stock but if you MUST have an HP genuine battery contact one of the UK HP Resellers on the bottom of this page:
https://parts.hp.com/hpparts/Part_Resellers.aspx?mscssid=9C8E0B046E8843089053CD165AECC9A0
I would say the Amazon compatible battery will be fine but its your choice.

We need the full model number and also need to know how old it is. Have you run a battery diagnostic? Even on machines with an "inside" battery, the battery can be replaced so you do not need to buy a new laptop. We can help with locating a replacement battery and with steps to replace it. Its not terribly difficult to do in most cases. Post back if you need more help.

Thank you,
The serial number is: 5CD6129Q0Z and product P3K45EA#ABU
It was bought at the end of 2015.
I have done a battery diagnostic but the HP Support Assistance does not think a battery is connected.
I can't believe that overnight whilst not in use the battery would come to the end of its life?
