I am about to go overseas for 6 months without my laptop, will the battery be OK when I get back ?

Yes discharge it to say 25-40% battery and leave it in a cool dark dry place. Do a full shutdown. Hold the shift key as you select "shut down". In the old days when batteries were easily removed I would have told you to remove it before storing the laptop 6 months but that is not really feasible on modern laptops.
