HP EliteBook 850 G6 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I have an HP Notebook 850 G6 running Windows 11 version 24H2.

I bought a new original HP battery.

However, I have noticed that this battery, even though it is new, discharges.

The day before, the PC is charged to 100%, and the next day, when I want to use the notebook, the battery is at about 70%!

And if I don't use it for 2 days, the battery is at 0%, so I have to charge it!

What is happening? How can I stop this discharge?

In the BIOS? In the Windows settings? The BIOS?

Thank you for your help!

Hi @sirexiv,

 Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your new HP battery is discharging faster than expected on your HP Elitebook 850 G6, here are steps to ensure the battery and system are functioning correctly:

  1. Check for Battery Health:

    • Use HP Support Assistant to check the battery health status. If there is any issue with the battery, it will be reported here.
    • To do this, open HP Support Assistant, go to "Battery Check," and run the diagnostics.
  2. Update BIOS and Drivers:

    • Ensure your notebook's BIOS is up to date. An outdated BIOS can impact battery performance. Check for updates on the HP support website.
    • Similarly, ensure that you have the latest chipset and power management drivers installed.
  3. Review Power Settings in Windows 11:

    • Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery saver and ensure that the "Battery saver" mode is configured properly to conserve power.
    • Check the "Battery usage by app" to identify any software that might be draining the battery excessively.
  4. Disable Fast Startup:

    • Fast startup can sometimes cause power usage issues. Disable it by going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable, and uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)."
  5. Adjust Sleep and Hibernate Settings:

    • Fine-tune your sleep and hibernate settings to ensure that the laptop enters a low power state after being idle. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Sleep.
  6. Check Background Applications:

    • Ensure no background applications are running that might be draining the battery overnight. Use the Task Manager to end unnecessary tasks.
  7. Check BIOS Settings:

    • Restart your computer and enter the BIOS menu (usually by pressing F10 during startup).
    • Go to Power Management options and ensure that all settings are configured to optimize battery usage.
  8. Inspect and Manage External Devices:

    • Ensure that no external devices (such as USB drives or peripherals) are connected that might be drawing power from the laptop when it is off.

If you have gone through these steps and the battery is still discharging rapidly, it may be worth checking if the battery itself is defective, despite being new.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
