Microsoft Windows 11

Recently I had to replace my HP 15s series laptop's battery when the capacity reached too low. The first battery lasted somewhere at 3 years. At the service centre, they asked me if I want to replace it with a cheap, non-HP battery or an original hp battey. i said use the original HP battery. after some days, i got the laptop back and the battery has been changed. All this happend 9 months ago. Today when I was using my laptop, suddenly it shifted down itself and when I turn it back on, the laptop showed me text saying that my battery has weakened too much and etc.. So i went to cmd and checked my battery report. and saw that more than 50% of the battery capacity has reduced. I'm not sure if a 9 month old battery should degrade the capacity by 50% as my first battery lasted 3 years. How do I know if the service centre scammed me by giving me a faulty battery or a fake HP battery.

@Shauntom, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding a battery issue!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It definitely seems suspicious that your battery has degraded by 50% in just 9 months. A genuine HP battery should not lose so much capacity in such a short time unless there was a defect, improper usage, or it wasn't an original HP battery. Here are some steps you can take to verify if you were scammed:

1. Check the Battery Report

Since you have already generated a battery report (powercfg /batteryreport in CMD), look for the following details:

  • Design Capacity vs. Full Charge Capacity: If the full charge capacity is drastically lower than the design capacity, it confirms heavy degradation.
  • Battery Manufacture Date: See if it aligns with when you got it replaced. If it’s older, they may have installed an old or used battery.

2. Physically Inspect the Battery

If you can remove the battery, check for:

  • HP Branding & Holograms: Genuine HP batteries have official branding and QR codes.
  • Part Number Verification: Compare the part number printed on the battery with the official HP website.
  • Build Quality: Fake batteries often have poor-quality plastic and incorrect labeling.

3. Use HP Battery Diagnostic Tools

  • Download HP Support Assistant or HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to check the battery’s health officially.
  • If the test shows an abnormally low health percentage for a 9-month-old battery, it might be a faulty or fake battery.

4. Check BIOS Battery Health

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS (F2 or ESC at startup).
  • Look for battery information in Diagnostics > Battery Health Manager.
  • If the status shows "weak" or "replace soon," it further confirms excessive wear.

Let me know if you need further assistance!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
