MINE IS FIXED!
And the solution was something I never thought about. (And I did try just about everything on this entire thread over the last few months.)
Anyway... may laptop cord quit completely.
I bought a new cord. (HP brand off eBay)
The icon now works perfectly.
Thus, I have come to think that the old cord must have had a slight problem that affected the flow of power sometimes, so whatever sensor triggers the icon wasn't sensing *enough* power.
Edited to add... evidently two of us discovered the same fix today.

I have ame problem described in the beginning: laptop (Pavilion dv7) does not recognise the AC power, even though the battery is charging. The icon does not show the power and charging and the led next to charger socket does not light.
I've tested with other AC Adapter and it's working just fine, no more issues.
Now I'm wondering: is the adapter the problem or is it a soft fault?

This will make the third time I've tried deleting the device and reinstalling it. I thought perhaps my battery had gone bad, which it had (probably because I ended up leaving the machine plugged in all the time), so I finally replaced it. I ran it on just AC without the battery for several months which worked fine and the plug icon showed, with a little red X indicating there was no battery. Replacing the battery has made no difference. The only time I can get the icon to show is when I plug in the charger while the machine is turned OFF. Not sleeping, not hibernating, but powered down. Then, when I turn on the machine the plug-in/charging icon shows up with the indication of the charge percentage. Once I remove the charging cord, regardless of how long I run the machine without it...a minute or a day, when I plug it back in with the machine in use, it refuses to function. The battery indicator shows whatever level it was when I unplugged it. It seems to not run down, but it does not show an increase no matter how long I leave it plugged in. This is extremely annoying. I ended up buying a tablet so that I could work elsewhere, as I can't depend on the laptop to be charged if I'm working mobile.
I've searched and searched for a way to rectify this. Doing a factory reset would be extremely inconvenient, and then once it updated itself, I imagine the problem would start all over again anyway. Has anyone found any further info on this?
Thanks

HI stealthpaws:
Thank you for your query: I will be pleased to help the best I can!
I understand the battery symbol does not show charging. I am providing you with some documentation on Troubleshooting Battery Power in Windows XP click here. I hope this helps

Intermittently, I have had the problem where the battery IS charging, but the icon does not say so on my Windows 8 HP Split x2 laptop. Here's what I have discovered in my case: it seems it is NOT a hardware problem with the laptop, battery, or power cord. What I have done many times is this:
1. Unplug and replug the power cord several times. This usually does it.
2. If #1 doesn't work, I have had success closing the lid of my laptop. I think this causes the laptop, given my settings, to go to sleep. When I re-open the lid, I have to press the power button to wake up the machine. At this point, an error message appears on the screen saying that there was a problem with a display driver, but that the problem has been fixed. Now the icon is fine, and shows the little power plug charging symbol. Whew.
Very annoying problem. Good luck!
