Good evening, I'm writing here because I'm at loss of places to look answers to and I really don't know what to do.

I have a very old laptop, i purchased it in 2013 and it has been working splendidly until yesterday (mind you, I'm a very basic user - I've never changed battery, never cleaned the inside or touched where I wouldn't know how to deal with).

Yesterday I noticed my laptop would shut down if I removed the charger from it, something that never happened before - I noticed that it said that the battery wasn't detected.

I tried removing it and cleaning it with nothing but some qtips with some alcol on them and I let it dry before reinserting the battery, to no avail. I also tried to uninstall the battery and reinstall it, but it was useless.
I then tried checking the battery health on BIOS but my BIOS is too old to have that function so I installed the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Program, which I ran and it said "Test on battery canceled".

I really don't know what to do and I really need my pc to work. Do I need to buy a new battery?

Thank you to anyone who will take their time to help me

If the laptop can be turned on with the charger plugged in and the battery is not installed, you may need to replace the battery with a new one.

Thank you for reaching out.

I bought a new battery and it did, in fact, work again.

Many thanks!
