Starting a few weeks ago, my battery would suddenly no longer charge, and would die. Several hours later, after unplugging it and plugging it back in several times, it would recharge, until recently; the battery will not charge at all now.
I'm looking for a precise replacement battery. Thank you in advance.

No a battery sold as compatible with either part number will work. Same thing on amazon
Some even cheaper on amazon but I try to stay with at least 4 and preferably 4.5 stars and 50+ reviews.

See p. 38
Battery, 4 cell, 70 Wh 917724-855
Battery, 3 cell, 52 Wh L08855-855
You have given us a CTO model number and you could have either of the above batteries. Which you have depends on your hardware configuration. Either one can be found we need to know which you have so please open it and let us know.

Thank you! It's the first one.
I guess my remaining question is this:
The battery says the part number: 917678-172
It also says replace with (spare part number): 917724-855
Does it matter which? I found the former pretty cheap here: https://www.laptopbatterydirect.net/hp/hp-917678-172-battery.htm

How did you determine its the power cord? The model number you give is a CTO and might include laptops with a variety of specs. Uses one of these adapters:
330 W, 7.4 mm 925142-850
230 W, 7.4 mm 925141-850
200 W, 4.5 mm L00818-850
150 W, 4.5 mm L32661-001
I have never seen a 330w adapter and this one is the 230w with the bigger 7.4mm plug. Note other versions have the smaller 4.5 mm plug:
925141-850
Genuine one is pretty expensive:

thank you again!
well, initially, my battery stopped charging. i replaced the battery with the one you linked to, which came partially charged, computer worked fine, but battery wouldnt charge. the orange light that usually comes on to indicate its connected doesnt come on. the part of the cord that goes into the pc is also a bit bent up.
i can confirm its 330 watts. does that narrow it down for sure, or are more specs needed?

You need this one:
330 W, 7.4 mm 925142-850
This is the biggest most powerful laptop AC adapter I have ever seen so its going to be costly. Found it here for under $90 however:
