My laptop's battery won't charge. I thought of buying a new battery, but before that I wanted to test it out. I have a friend with the same model of laptop and we tried swapping batteries. The result: my battery charges just fine on my friend's laptop, meanwhile his battery won't charge on my laptop. Switching the charger doesn't work either.

 

In other words the problem isn't with the battery nor is it with the adapter. What could be the problem and is there a way to fix it?

It sounds like the issue with your HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-cx0056tx could be related to the charging system on your laptop itself, rather than the battery or charger. Let’s go through a sensory-rich troubleshooting process to figure out what might be causing the issue.

 

1. Inspect the Charging Port

  • Start by gently running your fingers along the charging port of your laptop. Feel for any looseness or wiggle in the port as you plug in the charger. A loose connection could indicate a damaged port. Listen for the click or snap of the connection—it should feel snug and secure.
  • If the port feels loose, that could be the root of the issue, and a repair might be necessary.

2. Check the Power Jack and Motherboard

  • Open the laptop’s bottom panel (if comfortable doing so) and look for the power jack connection to the motherboard. You may feel a bit of anticipation as you unfasten the screws.
  • Ensure that the power jack is securely attached to the motherboard. Sometimes, the power jack can get loose or misaligned. Gently press on the connector to ensure it’s not loose, and make sure no dust is clogging it.
  • If everything feels snug and properly in place, you can close the panel.

3. Perform a Power Reset

  • With the laptop powered off, disconnect the charger. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Feel the smooth surface of the button under your fingertip as you hold it, and imagine the laptop resetting its internal power circuits.
  • Now, plug the charger back in and restart the laptop. Sometimes, this simple reset can recalibrate the charging system.

4. Update or Reinstall Battery Drivers

  • Press Windows + X and open Device Manager. Navigate to the Batteries section. You’ll feel a sense of control as you expand this category and see your battery drivers listed.
  • Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and select Uninstall. Feel the satisfaction as you clear out the driver.
  • Restart your laptop, and the system will automatically reinstall the battery driver. This could resolve any software issues that are preventing your battery from charging.

5. Check BIOS Settings and Update if Needed

  • Enter the BIOS by restarting the laptop and pressing F10 repeatedly as it boots. Feel the slight pressure as you tap the key to access this deeper system layer.
  • Once in the BIOS, look for the battery status. If the BIOS doesn’t detect the battery, it could indicate a hardware-level issue.
  • While you’re here, check if a BIOS update is available. Updating the BIOS could solve the issue if it’s related to system-level miscommunication with the battery.

 

By the end of these steps, you should have a clearer sense of whether the issue lies in the charging port, power circuits, or a software-related glitch. If none of this works, it may require examining the motherboard or replacing the DC jack. In this case, I recommend you contact the phone support for further assistance.
