Common problems for Battery
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about: Battery Reports, Hold a charge, Test and Calibrating Battery . Check out this link: Is your notebook plugged in and not charging?

I bought a second hand hp ProBook 3 months ago. In my laptop's installed batteries section, full charge capacity and design capacity are the same. The battery was working fine for 3 months. Today, while using it, the battery reached 59% and it shut down. I tried charging it and using it again, but it still works, but when it reaches 59%, it shuts down again. I don't know what's wrong with it. I don't know what batteries to change or how to fix it. Please let me know.

Hi @gan_inseo11 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

This is a classic symptom of a degrading or faulty battery cell, despite what the reported capacities say. When a lithium-ion battery has a fault in one of its internal cells, it can no longer deliver the necessary voltage or current under load, causing the entire system to shut down suddenly, even though the battery meter reports a remaining charge.

The fact that the full charge capacity and design capacity are the same suggests one of two things:

  1. It is a very new (or recently replaced) battery that has not had a full discharge/charge cycle recorded yet.
  2. The battery's internal controller chip is faulty or was reset to report the design capacity as the full capacity, masking its true health.

Since it is a second-hand laptop and the issue just started, the sudden shutdown at 59% points to a hardware failure in the battery itself.

Here is what you should do, step-by-step:

1. Run the HP Hardware Diagnostics Test

The most important step is to let HP's built-in tools test the battery's hardware health.

  1. Shut down your laptop.
  2. Turn the laptop on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. In the main menu, select Component Tests (or System Diagnostics).
  5. Select Power (or Battery).
  6. Select Battery Test and run it.

Result Interpretation:

  • PASS: The battery's firmware thinks it's fine, but the physical cells are likely failing. Proceed to Step 2.
  • FAIL (or Weak / Calibrate / Replace😞 The test has confirmed the battery needs service. Proceed to Step 3 (Replacement).

2. Attempt Battery Recalibration (If Test Passed)

A sudden cutoff at a specific percentage can sometimes be fixed if the system's battery meter (the SOC or State-of-Charge chip) has become unsynchronized with the battery's actual power level.

  1. Charge the laptop to 100% and keep it plugged in for an extra hour.
  2. Unplug the charger and use the laptop normally.
  3. Do not plug it in until it shuts down automatically due to the battery running out (which will likely still happen at 59%).
  4. Wait for at least 5 hours while the laptop is off to ensure the charge is completely drained from the cells.
  5. Plug in the charger and let the laptop charge to 100% without turning it on or interrupting the charge.
  6. Once at 100%, turn it on and check if the issue is resolved.

3. Replace the Battery (Most Likely Solution)

If the Diagnostics Test fails or the Recalibration does not fix the 59% shutdown, the battery has a physical defect (a faulty cell or connection) and must be replaced.

How to find the correct battery:

Official HP part search engine  where you can put serial of your laptop to get all part numbers of all product:
https://partsurfer.hp.com/

Where to Get Genuine HP parts:

Visit HP online official store. Click this click below:

https://parts.hp.com/hpparts/Default.aspx?mscssid=D0F5D7D3BC0748D78BA88A8F4EEDE14D&cc=US&lang=EN&jum...

Make sure you set the country location to get part.

Note: Since the laptop is a second-hand HP, the battery is the most common component to fail first, and the sudden shutdown is a strong indication of this. A replacement is the only reliable fix for this specific problem.

Please , do let me know if you need any other assistance, will be happy to assist you 🙂

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask any other queries as well
