I have a Zbook 15 G3 and some update service tries to install the BIOS update 01.27 Rev.A. The update fails because of missing files, according to a DOS screen that comes up after the reboot. I tried manually downloading the update and installing it with the exact same result.
So I am currently stuck with my PC performing a surprise reboot once a day without any warning or giving me a chance to save any of my work.

I downloaded sp87948.exe from here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-zbook-15-g3-mobile-workstation/8693763 and then execute it. It extracted files to C:\SWSetup\SP87948. On the next screen I selected Update (the default) and then got a warning:
WARNING:
Your current Intel Active Management Technology firmware is affected
by a critical security vulnerability.
Please update the formware and/or implement mitigations immediately.
See: www.hp.com/go/intelmanageabilityissue for details.
When I clicked OK it took me to the website and then informed me that:
This device has BIOS version 01.16
This utility will update it to version 01.27
After clicking Next it copied files and then informed that:
The BIOS update was prepared successfully.
Please restart this device to complete the update.
When I checked the directory C:\SWSetup\SP87948 existed with this content:
HPBIOSUPDREC.exe
HPBIOSUPDREC.log
HPBIOSUPDREC64.exe
HpqPswd.exe
HpqPswd64.exe
N81_0127.bin
WSSP87948.rtf
I closed all my application and restarted the device.

I have the same problem with an HP ZBook 17 G4. The bios update complains about missing files at the EFI\HP\Bios directory, which makes sense since there isn't a C:\EFI directory on my Windows 10 computer (even with hidden and system files showing).
It has tried to install the update several times and keeps failing with the same error.
