I have an HP Pavilion laptop that I've been using lightly for the past three years. Today, while watching lectures, it suddenly turned off. I thought it might be a charging issue, so I plugged it in, but now it turns on, and the screen is just black.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Hi @rowanlo2,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Pavilion x360 has a blank screen after suddenly turning off,

May I know

Do you see an HP Logo when you try to turn on the unit and then the screen goes blank or blue screen, If Blue screen Have observed any error message?

Or the unit is not turning On at all

Do You see a light glowing on the power button and next to the charging Port?

Please try the following Troubleshoots steps.

1.    Turn off the Unit.

2.    Disconnect the AC adapter.

3.    Remove any discs from the disc drive.

4.    Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

5.    Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

6.    Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

7.    Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.

Step 2

Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and Restart the unit

Step3

The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice  and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit

Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.

After the above  troubleshooting steps if the unit  turns on

here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Hard Reset the Laptop

  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try turning on the laptop again.

2. Check Display Brightness

  • Make sure the screen brightness isn’t turned down all the way. Try increasing the brightness using the function keys (usually Fn + F3/F4) to see if that helps.

3. Try External Display

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable. If the external display works, the issue may be with your laptop's screen or display settings.

4. Boot into Safe Mode

  • Try booting into Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to a software problem:
    • Turn off the laptop.
    • Turn it on and immediately start pressing the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
    • Select Safe Mode and see if the display works.

5. Reset the BIOS

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Turn it back on and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup.
  • If you can see the BIOS screen, try resetting to default settings (look for an option to load defaults).
  • Exit and save changes.

6. Check RAM and Hard Drive Connections

  • If you're comfortable opening the laptop, check if the RAM and hard drive are properly seated in their slots. Loose connections can sometimes cause boot issues.

7. Perform System Recovery

  • If the above steps don’t work, consider using a recovery option:
    • If you have a recovery USB or recovery partition, try booting from it to restore the system.
