My husband dropped it. I got a blue screen upon turning on with a little white dash in the upper left corner. After a few minutes, the dash went away and just the blue screen for a few more minutes. At this point, an HP symbol appears and states it trying to automatically fix this issue. After a few more minutes, it turns itself off.
I turned on, hitting F2, and ran the smart check. It passed for everything but the hard drive.
Hard Drive SMART check : FAILED
Failure ID : Q366XA-84E8RM-XD7X6J-60A103
I would like to know if:
the computer is trash and I've lost everything on the hard drive
or
I can replace the hard drive AND retrieve what is on the damaged hard drive
or
a combination
Any suggestions or thoughts? And the computer is 18 months old and out of warrenty. I would like to find the cheapest way to go and same the data if possible.
Thank you!

Pages 39-43 of the Manual here:
Remove the hard drive and use one of these to connect it to another computer:
You can also get a replacement hard drive for it on amazon or even at Walmart where you bought the laptop:
$50 is much cheaper than a new laptop. Did the drop do any other damage?
We can help you get software back on it and it is pretty easy espescially if you have Windows 10.
It is really hard to know how much data you can salavage from the drive but if it could run the test it is likely you can get some of the data off it.

Thank you for your help! I have purchased the new hard drive and the cord to check the old one.
As soon as I hooked up the drive using the cord to my desktop, my desktop froze and had to be shut down. I tried a different laptop with the cord and it showed that the hard drive was empty.
Can you walk me through the process of putting my Windows 10 onto the new hard drive? I do not know what the original code numbers are for the Windows software, unless it is on the laptop somewhere. I also have the original box, if it would be on there.
I did not make any type of backup disks.

So when you plugged in the old hard drive externally to another computer that computer froze up? Yes that can happen if the hard drive is particularly badly damaged. It is going to be hard to get data off that drive. Lay it aside for now.
As for the blank drive, you have Windows 10? Use that other computer you have and go to the "Media Creation Tool" site here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Hav an 8 gig or bigger thumb drive in the other computer, click on "Download tool now", and follow the prompts to make a Windows 10 reinstaller disk.
When done put it in the laptop that now has the blank new drive....tap esc as you power up then F9 and select the USB disk as the boot source. Follow the prompts to reinstall Windows 10. Once you have that we can walk you through any driver or app installation.
