Hello,

I just installed a new Samsung Evon 860 SSD into my second drive bay. Is there a way to boot from the second drive bay? Will I just have to place the SSD in the first bay if I want boot priority?

 Thank You

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

If your computer cannot boot after upgrading system disk from HDD to SSD, the reason for this problem is that you may fail to reset the boot order in BIOS.

The boot order can be configured on the Advanced tab in the BIOS settings menu. The steps for modifying the boot order may vary depending on the model of the computer. Click here

Follow the steps from the above article "Configuring the boot order" Go to the BIOS and under the System Configuration menu and enable "Legacy" boot. Then restarted the laptop and check.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

So I just plugged in the SSD SATA cable into port 1 and my old HDD into port 2. I booted Windows from a flash drive with the ISO image files. Windows 10 installed, awesome. It said it had to restart, ok cool. It restarted and I was hit with "No bootable device". So I tinkered with the BIOS settings and activated "Legacy Boot", and from there I rebooted and went to my "Boot Device Options"(F9). I clicked on "Boot From EFI File", then I located "bootx64.efi", I saw my HP logo and VIOLA my laptop was running as usual! I thought everything was cool. I setup some settings with Cortona and enter the desktop. I am impressed with the SSD speed, and I see that my SSD contains all the Windows installed files on it. Cool. I restart it just to check if everything is running smoothly...NOPE! At the relaunch I am hit with "No bootable device". I have to again find the EFI file and manually launch my desktop. Once the EFI boot launches it works as normal, my user settings are saved, and it recognizes my password/username. So how exactly do I get my computer to automatically launch the EFI boot file instead of me having to manually trigger it every time I need to use my laptop?

Please help! Thank you.

It looks like you were interacting with @Echo_Lake, but he is out for the day. I'm KrazyToad & I'm at your service.

Please ensure the USB drive is not connected after you have installed Windows and also ensure your SSD drive is the primary boot device in BIOS

You can update the BIOS from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-ENVY-m7-Notebook-PC-series/5354978/model/5390704 and then check to ensure the Hard drive is the primary boot device

Let me know if the issue persists

Thank you

I had already updated the BIOS but it did nothing for the situation. I don't know why but this particular BIOS doesn't allow you to pick exactly which Drive you want to boot from, it's very limited compared to other BIOS. You can only select to boot from OS Boot Manager, CD Drive, USB, or Network Adapter. No option to select a specific HDD/SSD. Very unfortunate.

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. Let's try this troubleshooting steps and check for the result.

  • Firstly, move the hard drive device to the top of the boot sequence list.
  • Next, expand the hard drive device to display all hard drives.
  • Move the USB device to the top of the list of hard drives.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
