Boot Linux Live USB on HP an012nr?

I've got an HP an012nr laptop and would like to see it operate a modern Linux distro like Linux Mint 18.1.

I downloaded it and used F11 at boot time to select the USB stick to boot from, but it seems to find the media defective.

Has anyone booted a Linux distro on this laptop?  

Is there any special setup or distro required? 

Is there a BIOS setting that I need to make to allow Linux to boot properly from the USB stick?

Hi,


Try this:
Disable secure boot and enable legacy from BIOS. Save and exit.

Plug in USB.

Change boot order to USB by tapping f9 as soon as you power on laptop.

Yes that did help, thanks (all but the f9, I had set up the boot order to take the USB first which worked too).

The other issue I was having was that the USB key I was using had a messed up MBR, I had used it to restor the firware on a previous laptop to get Windows 10 working on that machine and that firware ISO somehow munged the MBR on that USB Key.  I used DiskTest to clean that up and after a reformat and reload of the LXDE ISO onto the key with Unetbootin it worked fine.

Thanks for your help, now I'm running LXDE/Lubuntu 16.10 just fine on the HP AN012NR and it's fast!
