I have difficulty figuring out why my volume (f5, f6, f7) arent working and my brightness (f3, f4) are also not working. Can someone tell me how to fix them without having to always hold fn button. Aslo is it normal for my battery life to last 20 minutes and then die, but then charge to 100% in about 5-10 minutes

@HalleHeness, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Brightness and Volume Buttons!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If the brightness and volume buttons on your HP notebook are not working properly, there might be a few reasons and solutions to consider:

Check Fn Key Lock: Some notebooks require you to hold down the Fn key to use function keys unless it is set to always enable. You can change this setting in your BIOS, usually accessed during startup.

BIOS Settings:

  • Enter the BIOS menu when your computer starts up (often by pressing F2, F10, or Del).
  • Look for settings related to Action Keys or similar functions.
  • Change settings to enable function keys without using Fn.

Keyboard Driver:

  • Ensure your keyboard drivers are up to date.
  • You can update drivers from Device Manager or use HP Support Assistant.

Operating System Updates:

  • Make sure your Windows OS is up to date.
  • Sometimes, Windows updates can resolve hardware usage issues.

Battery Life Concerns

The battery issue you described, where the battery lasts only 20 minutes and charges to 100% very quickly, is usually an indication of a failing battery:

Battery Health Check:

  • Check the battery health using diagnostic tools available from HP Support Assistant or directly within Windows (search for "Battery report" in Windows).
  • Replace the battery if it reports poor health.

Calibration:

  • Calibrate your battery: This process involves fully charging, fully discharging, and charging it again to recalibrate the battery's ability to measure its capacity accurately.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
