Pavilion 15-cd011nd
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Recently, my factory standard M.2 SSD in my laptop broke. This was likely due to doing a Factory Settings Reset according to a user of the HP support forum. For more info, see here.

The warranty on my laptop is expired, so I'd like to replace the SSD myself.

First of all I'd like to ask how I would do this? I know how to replace the SSD physically, but how do I install the new SSD AND keep the same installation of Windows 10? Is this possible? The only things I can do on my laptop are opening BIOS/HP Startup Menu. I contacted HP Support over the phone and they recommended to create a bootable USB stick with Windows 10 on it. How can I do that when I can't even access the laptop?

Second, is any 2280 M.2 SSD compatible with my laptop? I've searched quite a bit but I'm not quite sure what to look for to see if an SSD is compatible with my laptop.

I'm not experienced with this stuff, so any answers to my questions would be much appreciated, and a step by step explanation on how to replace the SSD/which SSD to pick/how to keep Windows 10/reset to factory settings would be amazing.

Thank you.

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

If you can another working computer you can create the HP Recovery Media. Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01867124

Please refer to page 2 in the Service Guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05485598 for list of compatible SSD Hard drives

Thank you

Thank you for your reply.

If I create the HP Recovery Media on my desktop PC, won't I have issues with my Windows 10 License? In other words, would creating recovery media using my desktop's Factory Image work on my HP laptop? Won't this cause the same issue as the one which broke my current laptop's SSD?

And the Service Guide says only to use 128, 256 or 512 GB SSD's. Does this mean my laptop doesn't support a 250 GB SSD? The one I had in mind was the Samsung 860 EVO M.2 Internal SSD (https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/1132641/samsung-860-evo-m2-250gb/specificaties/).

Thank you.

On the HP Driver Page to download the Recover Media, you need to use your Notebook's Product number to get to the Notebook Driver Page using your desktop and then download the Notebook Recovery to the Flash drive

Other SSD Hard drives might work but HP cannot guarantee the functionality since it was not testes with this Model

Thank you
