HI, I have found a bug related to the performance thermal profile in the hp command centre.

If you set it to this mode with the power connected then remove power it will force the CPU speed to drop to 800mhz and it will not move from that speed even if power is plugged back in.

Steps to reproduce.

1. open the HP command centre

2. select the performance thermal profile

3. Reboot the system so the profile fully applies

4. when the system is logged in open task manage and observe the CPU frequency.

5. remove the power plug

6. Observe the CPU frequency.

7. Re insert the power plug.

8. Observe the CPU frequency.

HI@ProfNova, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Request you the following list describes some causes of  Thermal profile to improve performances.

  • Dust inside the laptop.
  • A new component, such as a hard drive, is added. The extra component causes the power supply to work harder and generate more heat. Extra heat also radiates off the new component and adds to the temperature inside the case.
  • Over time, some cooling fans might slow down and wear out, as the laptop is getting hot, depending on the usage of the laptop.
  • High ambient room temperature.

Step 1: Removing dust and lint by cleaning vents

Step 2: Ensuring proper space for ventilation

Step 3: Updating the BIOS  ( Make sure Power adaptor connected to notebook )

Step  4: Update the Windows

Step  5:Update Drivers from HP Support Assistance

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

This laptop is only a week old so I doubt it is dust, the bios is already up to date as are all drivers and windows.

The room temperature was rather low at around 20c at the time this issue occurred.

Hi@ProfNova,

We would like to inform you that 90C is normal on the computer.

Select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Did you actually read what I said?
I never said anything about temperatures, i said that on the high performance profile when the power is removed the CPU runs at it's minimum speed of 800mhz.

Hi@ProfNova,

Yes, we understand CPU speed is related to overheating, it's automatically designed based on the application use.

I was monitoring the CPU temperature and it was 50c. It was not a thermal throttle issue.

Hi@ProfNova,

You can try AMD Ryzen Master (Link) or Intel IXTU (Link)

HP Recommended

Hi, I downloaded the intel IXTU as this laptop is intel based.

It seams the laptop is always power limit throttling.

If I put the laptop under a lot of stress the cpu will continue to get slower till around 1.2ghz or so. with intel reporting the reasons being power limit and the fans run slow.

I have found however if i place the laptop on a fan cooling pad the cpu will stay at around 2.9ghz and the fans will ramp up in the laptop,. it seams like the power delivery in the laptop is getting to hot but the internal fans dont take this into account in their speed. resulting in an cpu speed drop.

Is there a way I can control the fans manually to get around this issue/bug?

The laptop was also plugged in during all of these tests.

Hi@ProfNova,

`We have done the basic troubleshooting as per the document and the notebook needs to be checked taking remote access so that get to know it's a hardware or software issue.

I'd suggest you contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer or HP Chat Support Team.
