Pavilion x360 13.3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The drivers for the touchpad have not been updated since last year and have bugs in recent windows 10 version. There are some issues with it that needs an update. 2 finger scrolling speed is unusable within Windows apps, it is extremely fast, however its normal within other apps. Adjusting settings to slow down windows apps speed makes other apps scrolling glitchy and unusable. After changing a setting in ELAN, it works normally for a few seconds then goes back super fast like the correct setting is not sticking. Other people have complained of this exact issue too https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/8n0p8n/since_the_last_update_my_touchpad_scrolling/?st...

I have updated all drivers and even the bios but issue persists and makes using the laptop frustrating due to extreme variance in scrolling speed.

My laptop is out of warranty so I have no way of contacting HP to report the issue so this seems like best place to report it.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand, touchpad scrolling does not work as expected after installing the latest Windows Update,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

(Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

Does it work fine without the update?

Have you tried running the hardware test on the touchpad?

Did you perform HP Support Assistant Updates and Windows Update?

Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:

Run Hardware diagnostics:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

  3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click Component Test

  4. Select Mouse/Touchpad Tests - There are two mouse tests to determine if the mouse is functioning correctly - the Pointer Test and the Drag and Drop Test.

  5. To run the tests, click Mouse/Touchpad. Select the test you want to run, and then click Run once. Follow the instructions to complete the test.

If the test passes, create a new user account and check the functionality of the touchpad. Follow steps from the article: Click here

Keep me posted,

For I shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,

And your device is up and running again,

Cheers 🙂

I don't know as I just got the laptop and updated it immediately, didn't get a chance to check on previous windows version. I'm assuming it's due to new update from other complaints I've seen. According to product page, latest driver is for 1709. Some other HP laptops have touchpad driver specified for 1803 but not this one

No, its obvious the touchpad is not faulty, its a software issue. If I uninstall the ELAN driver and use the microsoft basic then scrolling is fine in all apps but there is no gesture controls.

Yes, all updates from HP support assistant and windows update are installed.

Thanks for the information,

Have you tried checking the functionality in new user account?

If not, I suggest you try that and keep me posted 🙂

I have made a guest account to try and as I expected, it made no difference. Its a driver issue, there is no easy solution without an update.

There was a fix mentioned on reddit

  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> SOFTWARE -> Elantech -> Smartpad

  • Change ScrollControl_Mode from 0 to 1

  • Open the elan software and click apply just to make sure the settings get applied

but this was 2 years ago and scrollcontrol_mode is no longer available to edit. It seems to be a recurring issue with hp + elan touchpads to have inconsitant scrolling speed in different circumstances. It is very frustrating and my other laptops have no such issue.

Thanks for responding,

It's great to have you back 🙂

Since we have tried possible steps, I would suggest you perform Push-button Reset: Click here

NOTE: Please back up your personal data before performing Push Button Reset.

Let me know how this goes,

Cheers 🙂

The computer has been reset just a few days ago. Everything I've already tried points towards this being a driver issue, no basic steps like reset, new user account will magically fix this.

Can you just forward the info onto HP tech support, to try get an updated driver with a fix for this issue?
