Help......

I was using my laptop yesterday and I smelt something burnt in it all of a sudden. I worried and tried to open the cover to see what's wrong. I found the HDD connecter was burnt.

My laptop model is Pavilion 15 ck063tx. The laptop had an upgrade of ssd and ram last month. Can I know what should I do now? I had so many important files in the hard drive 😭😭😭

Hi,

First, I hope you are not throwing those eggs at the computer! :generic:

Does the PC still boot without the drive, giving the HP screen.

Now, let me see if I can help you. You can try to recover your important data from the SSD by using a USB to SATA adapter which you should be able to buy in local computer shop. Attach to a different computer and use like an external drive. When you try to open the User folder on the drive it can take quite some time as all the files will first change their security settings. This way you can also check if the SSD is working and if it is the cause of the short and burning of the cable. (what brand of SSD?)

Example:

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&q...

Now the hard drive cable has part number L01855-001

It is available in HP parts store in the US, so you can check in your country or try performing online search with part number.

On page 34 of service manual you can see how to install the drive.

Now, from your pictures I see that the burn is also on the tip of the flex cable, so I hope that the slot on motherboard has not been damaged. Can you take a look or post a picture of the slot. If the slot where the flex goes is damaged it is going to be real difficult to fix. The official repair would be to replace the motherboard. We can also discuss some other possibilities.

Now even if the slot for the hard drive is burnt there is still the option of installing an M2 SSD (if you have not already done so, the upgrade you performed was it a replacement of the 2.5" hard drive with a 2.5" SSD or an installation of an M2 SSD?)

While the PC is open check if the M2 slot is present on motherboard as sometimes the physical slot is missing on PCs that did not come with the M2 SSD.

M2 slotM2 slotIf the slot is present it will support an M2 SATA3 drive or much faster M2 PCIe NVMe drive.

You can then reinstall the OS on the SSD.

Please let me know if you need any further help with any of the above,

David

M.2 SSD (ADATA 128GB) and an extra 4GB Ram. It is working fine until now after I removed the burnt cable out of it. The Windows boot up without any signs of problem.

I used a SATA to USB adaptor to check my original internal HDD from the laptop and every files are still intact and accessible (thank Lord for that).

I checked with all the connection ends on the motherboard and found that only the affected slot got a small green mark on the surface of the slot. It is not melted.

It will be okay if I only rely on the M.2 from now onwards, but it is very inconvenience since I have tons of files in my HDD and my M.2 has only 128GB.

Thank you 😊

Your welcome.

Glad about the eggs!!

So, your options is to try a new cable on the slot and see if it works  or you can put a much larger M2 drive in the PC, you could perform this upgrade yourself without too much cost as SSDs have become much cheaper. If you need any help with such an upgrade, let me know.

David
