Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Check if the drive is now working.
If the drive is not working, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager. Click to open the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right click on the first channel and select uninstall. Do not delete drivers if asked. When uninstalled repeat the process for each channel. Also if an ATA controller is listed, right click and uninstall this, again not deleting drivers if asked. Then open DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right click the drive and select uninstall. Do not delete drivers if asked.
Reboot the PC and let Windows reinstall the devices. Check the drive again.
If it still isn't working, run the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below again.
Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager. Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right click the drive and select uninstall. Do not delete drivers if asked. When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ). Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

Got the same problem with one variance. DVD/CD does not show up in device manager. It is there in bios, makes noises, lights up when Windows starts, lights up if you put in a DVD or CD, sounds like it tries to run so it seems the computer knows it's there but it just doesn't work. Tried Microsoft Fix It, downloaded new drivers from HP website, tried restore, am at wits' end. Barely used the drive so it can't be kaput. Any help would be much appreciated. It seems like all these CD drives, whether you use them or not, cause problems a few years in.

@lystgl,
Follow the procedure on the link below to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and follow the steps in Part 3 to 'Try it' to see if this OS will run from the CD ( this will not need to install on your HDD ) - this will give a good indication as to whether the optical drive has failed as no software drivers are needed, so if Ubuntu will not run, the problem is likely to be withh the Hardware.

Hi,
You need to create the Ubuntu CD on another PC and then see if it will boot in your notebook. If this will not boot, then the problem is probably Hardware related rather than a problem with windows drivers/configuration.

i ran the utility once and it seemed to work for a while. then one day it doesn't read discs at all. this time the utility didn't work. uninstalled the device (BD-ROM) and rebooted and all good again. 😕 annoying but it worked.

Hi,
You can easily use an external Drive (External Optical one) such as:
https://yepo.com.au/pioneer-usb-ext-blu-ray-bdr-xd05tb-bdr-xd05tb-bun.htm
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SE-506BB-TSBD-External-Blu-ray/dp/B00AO1XFM0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1...
Such Drivers will lay down the question partly, till that time when you fix internal driver using HP service.
Cheers,
Bart
