Suddenly the EJECT command is inoperative. I had to use paperclip to open the drive. After loading cd and closing drive, the pc does not seem aware there is a cd in the drive. Double Clicking the drive a message requires the drive to be loaded!
In my view there is no coomunication between the drive and the pc. Please confirm, or otherwise and advise the correct course of action to rectify the above. Many thanks for any help.

I would replace the optical drive with a new one and check. Then proceed with connector cable replacement later on.

ODD includes bezel and bracket , HP part number : 620604-001
ODD connector cable is not spared separately, it is included in cable kit, so you've to buy that, HP part number : 595201-001

See if resolutions given in here work for you:

Use fix it, otherwise Resolution #3/4/5 will work.

Many thanks for your interest to help.
My first attempt to have windows automatic diagnosis and fix action failed, as the drive did not open and no sound of any kind was produced. Windows announced that windows was opening the drive to insert media for reading but the drive remained dead as it was.
Using paperclip I opened the drive and inserted a dvd with various contents on but the system responded that the data was unreadable.
"regedit" run as administrator at the defined place in the registry had no filters of any kind.
As the basic rule is that there should be communication between system and all devices and in this case there was no response to the first command to eject I deduce that either the device connecting cable is broken or the final control element associated control circuitry has failed. (I am thinking here of a driven electromagnet as a final control element in the "Eject" operation but I am only speculating!)
I shall appreciate your views on the above and your further advice, if any. Once again many thanks for all your interest to help.

Most probably connector issue or laser/lens issue along with faulty tray-loading mechanism.
All I could suggest you is to go through this:

After so many different ways of attempting to solve the problem of failure to EJECT either by command or manually and the fact that only a paperclip can open the drive, inevitably I have come to accept that the drive needs replacement, but in that solution I feel that the communication cables integrity must be confirmed and the best way of achieving that, in my view, is to change them as well. Please comment.

Visruth you were absolutely right. It was the drive which is now replaced and cabling is not involved.
Many thanks for your invaluable suggestions. Your contribution and help is greatly appreciated, I am sure. As a result of the last change of drive another question has come up which I shall ask separately. Many thanks for all your help.
