HP ProBook 650 G1
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello, I am wondering if it is POSSIBLE, not RECOMMENDED, to upgrade the CPU of the HP ProBook 650 G1 to the most powerful processor for its socket (G3), the Intel Core i7-4940MX Extreme Edition. I ask this because most laptops of this model come with a 37-watt TDP processor, but the 4940MX is a 57-watt TDP. I am worried not by the possibility of overheating, but the motherboard/BIOS restrictions there might be even though the processor will likely fit.

Will the new processor operate on the laptop despite the TDP jump?

Hi,

It has the following options

PROCESSOR

  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4712MQ with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.3 GHz, 6 MB cache, 4 cores) – HM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4610M with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (3.0 GHz, 4 MB cache, 2 cores) * Up to 3.7 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology – QM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4600M with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.9 GHz, 4 MB cache, 2 cores)* Up to 3.6 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology – QM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4330M with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.8 GHz, 3 MB cache, 2 cores)* Up to 3.5 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology – QM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4310M with Inel HD Graphics 4600 (2.7 GHz , 3 MB cache, 2 core)* Up to 3.4 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology – QM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4300M with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.6 GHz, 3 MB cache, 2 cores)* Up to 3.3 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology – QM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4210M with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.6 GHz, 3 MB cache, 2 cores)* Up to 3.2 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology – HM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4200M with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.5 GHz, 3 MB cache, 2 cores)* Up to 3.1 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology – HM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i3-4100M with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.5 GHz, 3 MB cache, 2 cores)* – HM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i3-4000M with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.4GHZ, 3 MB cache, 2 cores)* – HM87 Chipset
  • 4th Generation Intel® Celeron 2950M 2.0 GHz (no turbo boost on Celeron), 2 MB L3 cache, 37W – HM87 Chipset

From 37W to 57W is around 54% jump. This won't work

Regards.

I learnt the hard way after installing i7-4800MQ in HP 640 G1 , which has a heat sink designed to handle a max a 37W cpu. So although the i7-4800MQ works it throttles  as soon as cpu intensive work begins. So don't was  waste money  going above 37w cpu.

I saw that not all but  some 640 G1s handle well according to userbenchmark. Therefore bought a 4810MQ today but unfortunately it won't boot. Mine has  QM87 Chipset with latest BIOS: I also noticed that ones with 4810QM and similar ones like 4910MQ etc. have HP motherboard 1993. So my question is what is your motherboard @AnilM , is that a criteria at all? Thank you.

Update: It turns out that the 1st CPU was defective. 2nd one works flawlessly.  However in XTU benchmark I noticed that the top freq. is 3.19Ghz for 4 cores with occasional current limit throttling, but stable at 95C max.

I made some fine tuning and lowered some figures, after that it raised to 3.39Ghz, again stable at 95C max.

Currently  the fastest one in userbenchmark records.

QM87, cpu upgrade, 4300M, 4810MQ
