Hi:

Not without replacing the entire motherboard for the one that supports quad core processors.

See chapter 3 of the service manual, page 26.  There are different motheboards for the dual and quad core processors.

@andreilokve

Yes, there is a list of CPU's supported on page 1 of the the following manual

          http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03382696.pdf

The manual also shows you part number and how to replace CPU on page 78

Regards.

The manual says that 840qm supports for my laptop as well as 720qm. why should I then buy another motherboard?

HP Recommended

Well, that is up to you...buy just the processor, and if it works, great.

If not, then buy the quad core motherboard as is set forth in the manual...

But you have to ask yourself this question...

Why would HP specifically list separate motherboards just for the dual core processors, and separate motherboards for just the quad core processors, if you could put a quad core processor in the dual core motherboard?

(12) System board (includes replacement thermal material and VGA support bracket)

For use with the following dual-core processors: 520M, 540M, 620M    595764-001

For use with the following quad-core processors: 720QM, 820QM           595765-001

thanks a lot, I can not find the motherboard for the 4 core processor. and I think it can be done differently

You're very welcome.

If you decide to buy a quad core processor, please let us know if it worked without any problem in the dual core motherboard your model has.

HP Recommended

I will of course. in any case I will also require a motherboard too.

i upgraded the cpu, to a 740q quadcore and it works fine. 1.720Mhz on all cores on 100% laod

, tested with HavyLoad  for 1h. Untitled.png

That is great news.

Did you have to change the motherboard from the dual to the quad core one?
