I have an HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-dk0056nr. When I plug in the adapter, the CPU sometimes drops from the base speed (2.40GHz) to 0.79GHz. I have to remove and re-plug the adapter a couple times to get it to reach the full speed of 4.00GHz.

I've tried to get an answer before, to no avail. So I'm giving it another shot. Any info appreciated.

Hi @kiral9,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion Gaming laptop (model 15-dk0056nr) is experiencing CPU speed fluctuations when you plug in the adapter, it could be due to several reasons. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to address this

issue.

Check for Power Settings:

  • Go to the Windows Control Panel.
  • Click on "Power Options."
  • Make sure you have selected a high-performance power plan. This should ensure that your CPU runs at its maximum speed when plugged in.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure that your graphics and chipset drivers are up-to-date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause performance issues.
  • You can download the latest drivers from the HP website or use Windows Update to check for driver updates.

BIOS Update:

  • Check if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop on the HP website. BIOS updates can sometimes resolve hardware-related issues.

Thermal Management:

  • Overheating can cause your CPU to throttle its speed to prevent damage. Make sure your laptop is running in a well-ventilated area.
  • You can also use third-party software like HWMonitor or Core Temp to monitor your CPU temperature. If it's running too hot, consider cleaning the laptop's vents and fans to improve airflow.

Malware and Background Processes:

  • Run a malware scan to ensure your laptop is not infected with any malicious software that could be affecting performance.
  • Check Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) for background processes that might be using CPU resources. Close any unnecessary applications and processes.

Power Adapter and Charging Port:

  • Ensure that the power adapter is functioning correctly. Faulty adapters can lead to power fluctuations.
  • Check the laptop's charging port for any physical damage or loose connections.

Battery Settings:

  • Sometimes, issues with battery management can affect performance. Try removing and reinserting the laptop's battery if it's removable.

Reset Power Management Settings:

  • You can reset power management settings to their default values by running the following command in Command Prompt with administrator privileges:

powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

Remember to back up your important data before making any significant changes to your laptop's settings or performing a BIOS update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
