Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade the CPU in my Compaq Presario CQ60 430CA? And if so, what processors does the motherboard support?

I am currently running an intel pentium 2.1g dual core CPU, and I would enjoy a bit more power. Now, im not that familiar with CPU's, but is it possible to go up to a quad core?

I am running windows 7 home premium.

Hi:

Yes, it is possible to upgrade the processor in your PC.

Below is the link to the service manual.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02985882.pdf

Supported processors are listed in chapter 1, page 1-1

No Intel i-series processors are supported.

Hi i see from info you have given to the OP that the CQ60-214em can also have a CPU upgrade.

but i have a question about it.

fist - will there be a bios problem with a new CPU or is the an update that can be downloaded?

second - will the stock cooling be ok with an upgrade from a T1600 to a P7350 or T5800

also what would you say would be the best out of the two chips P7350 or T5800, i know there both old but there both better and the laptop works and look fine so may as well give it a new CPU to help it keep up with life.

Hi:

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02985882.pdf

Since your notebook came with the Celeron T1600, that means most likely that the chipset in the motherboard is the Intel GL40, which cannot run either of the processors you referenced (or any 800/1066 MHz FSB processor for that matter).

The best you would be able to do and I can't say if it will work, is the Pentium T3400.

That still would be better than what you have now.

I have laid them side by side for you at the link below to compare the specs.

http://ark.intel.com/compare/35583,38979

Once again, no guarantee the T3400 will work.

If you want to take a gamble on it, please post back and let us know how the upgrade went.

There is only one fan/heatsink assembly no matter what processor you use, so you can reuse your current one but you will need to reapply the thermal compound or your CPU and GPU will overheat.

Hi, thanks for the fast reply.

i hae seen the T3400 on an auction site for aroung £6 (£8), i think at the price i will gave it a go not rear much to lose.

CPU-z dose show i have the GL40 chipset, it also shows my bios is F.32 11/20/2008 is there as update out, as i dont want to do a cpu chop just to fine i need new bios for it to run.

You're very welcome.

What operating system are you running?

You can check the support and driver page for the operating system you are running at the link below and install the latest BIOS if you are not already at the lastest.

Before updating the BIOS read the release notes from all the previous versions and see if there are any that add support for new processors.

If not, I would not bother to update it.  Too much risk as you know.

Hi CPU came today so will fit sunday and let you know how it go's.

but i have a second question, my system as 2gb of ram and i know some of the Presario CQ range will only support 3gb of ram with my system having the gl40 chip set would mine take 4gb? or do i stay at 2gb.

Hi:

You can install 4 GB according to Intel and the service manual (chapter 1, page 1-3).  That 3 GB config is fine but they must have left out the 2 x 2 GB configuration.

Here is the chipset specs from Intel. Clearly 4 GB of memory is supported.

You can also run the free Crucial Memory Scan tool which should confirm you can install 2 x 2 GB of PC2-5300 memory.
