Dear Irfan_06,

First of all, I would like to thank you sincerely for your attention and assistance with this case.

I am reaching out to request support regarding my HP 12C Gold financial calculator, model HSTNJ-KN11, serial number Edited.

The calculator presents a serious and irreparable defect that makes it unsuitable for professional use, as it produces mathematically incorrect results in essential financial calculations.

After an extensive diagnostic process, I have verified that the issue is not related to configuration or user error, but rather to an internal malfunction. Below is a detailed summary of the tests performed and the problems identified:

  1. Initial Diagnosis – Error in Interest Rate (i) Calculation with Fractional Periods:
When attempting to calculate the annualized interest rate of a bond (LTN) with PV = 755.06, FV = 1000, and n = 1.9642 years (495/252 days), the calculator fails to handle fractional periods correctly. It incorrectly assumes n = 1, resulting in 32.44% instead of the correct 15.38%.

  2. Failure in Alternative Workarounds:
I attempted to compute the formula manually. However, the calculator displayed “Error 2” (a financial error) when executing a purely mathematical operation (0.5 g 1/x), suggesting an internal conflict between the mathematical and financial modules.

  3. Failure in Basic Present Value (PV) Calculations:
    To confirm the issue, I tested a PV calculation with a fractional term (n = 18.5, i = 1, FV = 5000).

  • Calculator Result: -4,159.29

  • Mathematically Correct Result: -4,157.60

This conclusively demonstrates that the calculator cannot handle non-integer periods properly and that its calculation engine produces inaccurate results.

  1. Unsuccessful Reset Procedures:
All reset procedures were performed multiple times, including:

  • Clearing all registers (f CLEAR FIN, f CLEAR REG, f CLEAR PRGM)

  • Factory reset (– + × + ON)

  • Full physical reset by removing the batteries

None of these actions corrected the issue, confirming a persistent fault.

Conclusion and Request:
Based on these findings, it is clear that the calculator has a factory defect, likely in the firmware, which prevents it from performing financial calculations with the precision and reliability expected of an HP product. The incorrect results make it unusable for any academic or professional purpose.

Could you please advise me on how to proceed from this point?

Thank you once again for your time and support, Irfan_06. I truly appreciate your help.
