HP ENVY x360 15m-bq121dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my HP ENVY x360 15m-bq121dx with an NVMe SSD in its M.2 slot. The laptop already has 1TB 7200 HDD and I plan to keep it along with upgrade. My question is will the laptop support dual storage configuration if I use a M.2 2280 NVMe with 1TB storage.

The service manual is not very clear on what is supported and what is not.   http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06172053

The manual says

"1-TB, 7200-rpm, 9.5-mm hard drive + 256-GB, PCIe, NVMe solid-state drive with TLC "is supported but "1-TB, 7200-rpm, 9.5-mm hard drive + 256-GB, 2280, PCIe, NVMe solidstate drive"  is not.

However,  it also says in  solid state drive section that "1-TB, 2280 M.2, Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) 3×4, SuperSpeed (SS), Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) solid-state drive with triple level cell (TLC)" is supported.

I cannot understand how laptop can support 2280 in single storage configuration but not in dual storage configuration.

The Notebook has not been tested with 2280 dual disk configuration that is why it's not mentioned in the Service Guide

It might work but HP cannot guaranteed it's functionality or performance

You could try it at your own discretion

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

This Notebook Model has only been tested with the following list of  SSD Hard drives as per the Service Guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06325755

If you plan on adding extra SSD I suggest you upgrade as per the Service Guide since HP cannot guarantee the functionality of other SSD Hard drives

Thank you

Hi @KrazyToad,

Thanks for your reply. As I said in my original mail, I see Service manual mentioning two different  things for 256GB 2280 NVMe depending on the configuration. My question was specifically how can laptop support 2280 configuration in single disk scenario but not in dual disk configuration?

Hitesh

For anyone in same boat as me: I ended up taking a chance by installing HP  EX900 500GB NVME disk. It worked flawlessly. One minor quirk you need to keep in mind- if you are copying over your OS from HDD to SSD - the system will still default to boot from HDD. The best option to fix that is to un plug HDD after copying over to SSD. Boot laptop once. Restart and then shut down. Now you can connect HDD again and system will still boot from SSD
