Been researching and have been shown conflicting descriptions of what options I have to add a second NVME 2.0 SSD to my hp ENVY 17-cn0026nr. Would like to be able to add a second drive instead of having to clone original drive requiring me to purchase an enclosure.

According to the service manual the notebook has support for one M.2 NVMe SSD.
Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)
So, if you plan on replacing the 512 GB NVMe SSD, you will need to purchase a USB3/USB-C to NVMe enclosure if you want to clone the drive.
If it is not too much trouble to reinstall your programs and files you can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall Windows, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.
Here is an info link for how to use the utility. You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive for this.
